Maybe they can get a do-over if things get too heated?

Panicked, rapid breaths were heard, alongside the roar of flames as a plume of fire burst forth, heating the air and threatening to singe the fur of three adventurers. Karamat was first to roll forward, the apprentice to Sir Gideon Mackay turning to look at his friends. Though something told him both were okay, he couldn’t help but turn in worry, seeing the pair of siblings were okay.

Ezmerelda, the Pyrodancer of the Morgan sisters, was able to create a barrier of fire to keep the other flames at bay, her graceful movements rushed as her sister ran ahead, clutching a stolen object for dear life.

“Hurry, run!” Karamat called as he gestured to a door on the far end of the hall.

“What do you think we’ve been doing, Kara?!” Sapphire, Ezmerelda’s older sister, barked as she followed.

The troubled trio were running rapidly, hearing the thudding, menacing steps of the drake from the main hall.

What had begun as the trio of adventurers raiding an old fortress for salvage had become more complicated as it turned out that a lesser dragon had taken refuge in the abandoned building and was using it to hoard treasure. Now, it was lumbering through the halls, spewing flames, its roars a promise of fiery demise to the adventurers, one that Karamat feared was certain as he rushed forward, an ominous sensation washing over him.

Even so, it was their only escape as the trio piled into the room before the drake could see them, slamming the door as the sounds of fire faded.

The trio caught their breaths, the paladin blocking the door behind him while the pair of siblings tried to get their bearings.

“Gods, we need to find a way out!” called Ezmerelda.

“Sis, hush, if we’re quiet it might not find us,” said Sapphire in a hush.

“No dice, dragons have a strong sense of smell. Odds are even if it can’t smell us, it’ll smell the treasure you took, the caorern said, gesturing to the blue orb Sapphire held.

Looking down at the blue sphere, aswirl with energy. It appeared to be ful…

Sapphire blinked a few times, looking at the pair in confusion before shaking it off. “...Okay, what’s next?”

“We need to get the drake off our back, but we can’t wait too long or else it’ll spew flames,” Kara said, puzzling out the situation.

“And given we’re on top of a powder keg that’s bad…” sighed Sapphire. “So what do we do? Ezzie, you’re good at fire magic, right? Can’t you do something to keep its fire from reaching us?”

“I mean, I’m good, but I can’t out-fire a drake yet, especially since my dances need to start up. I could maybe enchant Kara’s shield to ward them off, but that’ll only work a few seconds.”

“Great, so we get to survive one plume of that thing’s fire, great,” Sapphire grumbled.

“It has to inhale a second time to spew flames, though,” Kara said.

“Yeah, but what about it?” Ezzie asked, looking to the curly haired Caorern.

Kara then looked at the nearby barrels. “Maybe we could give it a tummy ache and hope for the best?”

“Maybe, but setting up a ward would take a minute at least before-” began Ezzie, only for them to hear rumbling steps.

In and instant, the trio’s blood ran cold as they started to fall silent, making the heavy approach even more palpable. They didn’t need to adjust the door to know that the monstrous drake was near, though they could hear it inhaling, already knowing what was coming next.

From there, all was instinct, with Kara raising his shield. Futile though he knew it was, he had it up behind the door, with his mace raised behind him, while Sapphire was holding to Ezmerelda, trying to protect her shorter sibling.

For Kara, even in spite of his resolve, he wished they had more time.

All that came next was a blur of heat as Kara watched the wooden door burn to ash, followed by the room filling with flame. There was a single noise, loud, deafening, then brightness, but he could swear that overwhelming the fiery orange were a calm, almost serene blue.
