If you had the time and financial support (sky’s the limit!), what would be your dream writing/creative project(s) - either with LRR or outside of LRR?

Pre-ordered from @bookshop.org ages ago and finally arrived. Clearly Katabasis is a PhD book so I really need to finish my chapter so I can read this.

Heading into the 5th year of PhD (not my arm).
An arm holding up a small metal lantern in front of a blue and yellow sign saying “Hail to Pitt!” in cursive letters.

Today’s conversation with PhD chair was mostly about being held to a higher standard because he knows I can do it. I actually don’t mind it - I’m glad to work with someone who cares about what I can/can’t do, and pushes me towards quality work.

Thank you as well, kind sir! Your words bring wonder and joy in an increasingly bleak world.

I had to sit with this for a moment. Sam just distills what science fiction can do, in terms of scale and storytelling, and how it tells that story through Magic. I am just in awe.

“That is why I like novels: instead of heroes they have people in them.”

Happily revisiting The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction by Ursula K. Le Guin: stillmoving.org/resources/th...
Black text on white background, by Ursula K. Le Guin:

“So the Hero has decreed through his mouthpieces the Lawgivers, first, that the proper shape of the narrative is that of the arrow or spear, starting here and going straight there and THOK! hitting its mark (which drops dead); second, that the central concern of narrative, including the novel, is conflict; and third, that the story isn't any good if he isn't in it.

I differ with all of this. I would go so far as to say that the natural, proper, fitting shape of the novel might be that of a sack, a bag. A book holds words. Words hold things. They bear meanings. A novel is a medicine bundle, holding things in a particular, powerful relation to one another and to us.”
