One must also recognize that AI's energy demands impose a social cost in terms of the environment. As is so often the case, the companies who become wealthy by such means are underwritten by the society as a whole which bears this cost.

I realize his fear is based on the belief that democracy may survive (I'm not so sure, but then I live in the Chicago metropolitan area with the imminent arrival of the Texas National Guard), but wouldn't it be better to espouse ideas that don't directly justify tyranny.

I don't disagree with your point; I wrote "more benign". In the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I think Biden's US appeared the lesser of two evils.

Some European countries invested quite heavily in building ports capable of accepting shipments of US LNG as a replacement for Russian oil after Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Under Biden, we looked like a more benign energy supplier. Not so much now.

And also the potential environmental issues raised if the current administration moved ahead to aggressively drill in Alaska and in coastal waters, something we would need to do to reduce our own imports of foreign oil.

On a related note, it will be interesting to see if Trump's catastrophic tariff policy leads to the end of the US dollar as the world's reserve currency, a status it gained in the Nixon admin when the US managed to get OPEC to price oil in dollars as the US abandoned the gold standard.

Perhaps part of the reason Trump and other MAGA types are so insistent on fossil fuels and derisive of solar power and other renewable energy is that the latter do not provide the opportunity for worldwide political influence that the fossils (of which the US has very substantial reserves) do.
