my final 2 cents of this after looking into the zine's founder, it sounds like the zine is her ego boost excuse to share her extremely vanilla and by-the-book "wisdom" by acting as editor to aspiring authors of a vastly underrepresented genre and using it as a means to promote her own name and books

im all for creating a space for those who want PG levels of horror but then just say so. but i also dont think that is their point if they are policing it down to saying it can't be told as memories or that werewolves and vampires can only be killed the "traditional" ways lest it not be "believable"

it's all "cannibalism as a metaphor for love," and horror film stills, and chain necklaces from fast fashion companies until an artist takes the genre and their craft seriously. until it gets too real, and you're forced to confront that "gross" and "afraid" live so close to curiosity and desire.

if anything I find it more "problematic" that so many people seem fine with shallow, aesthetic approaches to death, gore, and abuse but want nothing to do with the real meat of the genre. the terror, the eroticism, the question of "what makes a monster, am (I) a monster," the loneliness, the abject.

I think it's good for someone to enjoy the gothic, horror, and recognize the influences that misogyny, racism, systemic violence, etc. have negatively had on the genre. it's also fine to not care for certain tropes. but the desire to purify the impure for what, aesthetic purposes? is mind-boggling.
