I’ve never tried a reading club but the idea seems fun. My man thing is I’m a mood reader so what if the book of the month isn’t something I’m in the mood for then it turns my fun reading hobby into a chore. So I just stick to myself

Skyshade by Alex Aster Read on a Kindle 3/5 stars I am not sure where to begin really. The first two books were so fun & I enjoyed them a lot, but whatever magic was in those books didn’t transfer to this one. Initially it was off to a rough start because as soon as I heard it wasn’t the last book in the series I immediately stopped my reread & lost interest in finding out what happens until more books came out. However, finally getting around to reading it I was excited to see what happened next in this story. That is until I read it. This desperately needed another round of editing. There were lots of errors, oddly worded sentences & repetition. I found myself stopping just to figure out what was trying to be said. I understand an error every once in a while we are human & things can slip through the cracks. It happened often enough though to where it pulled me out of the story. The beginning was slower but that was fine with me. I did get confused on the pacing where it was slow then a random time skip then a bunch of stuff happening. It didn’t seem to flow from one thing to another. All the action happens in the last 30% of the book. It felt a little info dumpy as there’s a lot of new information to take in right at the end. As others have said, the love triangle seems stretched out way too thin. I found it odd how Isla seems to forget the love interest who isn’t in her immediate vicinity then when they show back up acts like the time apart was the worst thing imaginable. I felt like I was getting whiplash. If she really did miss Oro then I wish we were shown that instead of her telling the audience in her internal thoughts. There were also a lot of explicit scenes that felt too much to be in a series that’s marketed as ya. Nothing wrong with the scenes themselves, but please market your book to the correct audience. I’m not going to even touch on how insufferable Isla was. My rating is for Grim, Oro & the last 30% of the book.

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett Listened to the audiobook 5/5 stars In Garner County, during their 16th year the girls are sent to an isolated compound in the woods in order for them to release their power into the wilderness. As The Grace Year gets closer for Tierney James, she’s making plans to ensure she can set up the best life for herself as she can for after she returns. That is, if she can survive the elements, poachers who want to skin the girl’s for their magic & the other Grace Year girls. I’m not really sure where to start. This is one of those books that you need to sit & reflect on when it’s over. It is beautifully written & will haunt you long after you finish. From the start this was a captivating read that had me glued to my headphones. The tension was high & I needed to know what happened next at all times. The way the audiobook was set up there wasn’t many chapters so it was hard to find good pausing points because I always felt like I was in the middle of something. If you haven’t I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. This narrator was able to bring these characters to life & really get you immersed in the story. Each character had a unique sound despite having a single narrator. Truly a one woman show you will want to listen to. There are a lot of important themes throughout this book. For a dystopian novel, there are a lot of scenarios a lot of readers may have experienced in their own life which may hit close to home for a lot of people. When this book is having The Handmaids Tale & the female Lord of the Flies vibes please take that seriously & determine if this is the book for you & your headspace. Otherwise I think this is a beautifully haunting read & cannot recommend the audiobook enough

Depends on the background noise. I always read with music in the background. But if I’m out & there’s a lit of chatter or a tv show in the background I can’t focus
