So, if you're thinking about backing Blanksword but are unsure, there's a demo you can check out right now, which might help you decide. 😊👍

Never too late to learn!

That is implying that even if it were open source, there would be people who would continue to maintain it.

Which is also equally as likely that no one will maintain it if the project goes under. i.e. imgui extension. The source code is right there, you can pick up the mantle. Nothing stops you.

GMLive being a paid, closed source resource, has the benefits that it's likely to be maintained for as long as GameMaker does not provide native live reload support.

Now that's not true for ALL FOSS resources, but it does happen.

In software, things will always tend to break or developers will eventually be unable to maintain things overtime. I think the sad reality I find in the case of imgui and other FOSS resources, is that no one ain't financially contributing back towards them, so eventually they rot and cease to exist.

A lil fun fact about gml_release_mode. Unless you are using vertex buffers or ds_grids in your game, the "extra boost" doesn't do anything else. If anything, at most you can sleep at night know that you've set that to true. But it won't do anything beneficial for you.

Other than that though, if you haven’t already, you could compile your game to YYC. That does tend to give you between a bit of a performance boost, to like sometimes triple the performance. That does require setting up some stuff though.

*nods* fair enough! I presume you’ve been rocking the debuggers profiler where you can as well then?

Outside of that, I tend to find a majority of GameMaker games run fine on a lower end PC. What really ends up tanking performance is the drawing haha.

Also, platform targets will matter too. What you optimise on Windows, might need like 10x more work for android as well, because some very low end android mobile can’t run games nearly as well. And there does get to a point where you do want to have a baseline minimum!

(Nuc, or an old basic pc really)
tabularelf.com
Do you have a lower end device on hand to validate/check to see if it’s at or above your FPS target? If you don’t, it would be good to get a nuc pc. Otherwise you’re just optimising in the dark.

Not speaking for just Lexicon, but in general structs are the speedier version of ds_maps. You should almost always use structs, unless you absolutely have to use a ds_maps.

I'm still looking for short-term work to make ends meet! Things I can do:
- Write and organise documentation for your #gamedev project
- Consult on production for small dev teams
- Write and edit scripts, flavour text etc
- Program in GameMaker and Ren'py

How peculiar

I was checking the manual when I was writing my initial comment. 🤔

I haven’t tried out that param myself, but filters & effects are just all shaders, with some GML, last I’ve checked
tabularelf.com
Honestly I find it pretty acceptable given that the leaves themselves are just a filter. But I believe with a bit of work, you might be able to apply a flag to toggle param_particle_update_skip automatically, if the filter itself is detected (along with fx_get_name)?

Oh don’t worry, I have a spell that’ll instantly free you from Godots shackles and makes you free to use any engine again!
