It’s all about the pendulum, baby… the offenses transform, defenses figure out how to stop them, and offenses evolve again. The first one now will later be last, etc etc…

Those elite passers changed the game— defenses responded… and now offenses are changing (without elite passes) to survive…

But to innovate in a direction that keeps you ahead of everyone else who is trying to copy what you were doing.

It’s insane to continue to change and take risks when you’re successful, but it also is the most effective way to remain successful.

The entire league is both trying to figure out how to assimilate what you do into what they do while simultaneously trying to figure out how to stop what you do.

So the trick (and it’s why there have been so few NFL dynasties) is to continue not just to innovate…

It’s such a weird thing for teams who actually innovate to win (and I think the Eagles have kind of done that.) When you innovate well, it gives you an advantage— and so the tendency is to want to keep doing things exactly the way you have been… but if you stop innovating, everyone else catches up
