Peterborough nerd. I have more random Transformers toys and mecha guys on my desk than I can count.

Yes I do wanna see your collection of little things, I don't care what it is.

He/They
Brutal and heartbreaking.

These scams target the likely, vulnerable and the elderly. They prey on people who don't have much and take everything they can get.

I can only hope these people will be caught and prosecuted but the victims will never see a penny of their money back.

I was using the same 2024 article in videos a lil while back to cite that wealth inequality in Canada had reached record highs in 2024.

Fun update: there's now a 2025 article about how wealth inequality has reached record highs this year!

Wheeeeeeeeee

A frustrating pause to another mid-rise development. It's so aggravating for these developers to put forward these ambitious plans and then just... fizzle.

Like we have so many empty properties in the downtown #PTBO area, somebody just build something already. You WILL make money off of it.

I'm very sorry that Jeff and his family have had to deal with this, that's awful.

I'm also very sorry that Alex Bierk got threatened to be carved up like a turkey. That's awful too.
Mayor Leal now mentions he received a death threat before, and that his family's been threatened.

I need you to fill all these out because Ford is threatening tenant rights in a way that could make many unable to be housed.

Hey Ontario. Please pay attention to this. It's fucking terrifying. As a renter I rely on rent control in order to, you know, LIVE, and this threatens to take it away from me and most people I know.

Write to your MPP. Call Ford's office. I don't even know what to think right now. Fuck Ford, man.
In particular, they want leases to no longer necessarily remain in effect indefinitely, so that landlords have more options for creating tenant turnover.

Current situation in left-hand column, proposal on the right:

Doug Ford’s office has already received over ten thousand emails in the last 24 hours, saying no Bill 60, which would enable landlords to renegotiate leases every year, and refuse to renew without cause.

Acorn Ontario is calling this proposal “Ford’s most dangerous act” and they’re right #onpoli

Dougie is probably hoping his tariff ad stunt will distract people from this.

Sign this petition. Email your elected officials. If Ford is allowed to kill rent control, we will see an apocalyptic wave of homelessness from people booted out by landlords so they can raise the rent.
October 24, 2025 at 3:10 PM
Doug Ford wants to give landlords the right to kick you from your apartment so the landlord can charge more for it. It would mean the death of rent control in Ontario.

Hell no.

He will not be allowed to disenfranchise renters so he can enrich his landlord buddies.

Ontario bill would look at ‘alternative options’ for ending residential leases, scrap Toronto green roof bylaw. Here are the highlights
The Ford government has tabled an omnibus bill that would make changes to a whole suite of laws and regulations, from green roofs to tenant evictions and driver’s licences.

This was the response from Lansdowne Place in #Ptbo after talking with two scared seniors who were scammed out of their money by the Bitcoin machine.

Unacceptable. People are being taken advantage of and the mall is profiting from it.

Shoutouts to the political parties that attended yesterday's #PTBO Pride Parade, the NDP, Liberals and Conservatives!

You have to wonder how much the city is spending on these useless shelters just so they have a legal defence that allows them to evict homeless people from parks.

It also makes you wonder how that money could be better spent on permanent solutions instead.

Higher taxes. Huge amounts of debt. Who in Ptbo actually wants this new arena?

With cost of living skyrocketing, so many people out of jobs, this arena is bad business. It needs to be killed.
Riel asks how long the city would have to decide about whether the fall 2026 municipal election could include a referendum on whether we need a new sport and entertainment complex. Clerk John Kennedy says spring time would be the deadline.

I've had a lot of thoughts on high rise apartments over the past few years. I went from "Ptbo isn't the right place" to "well maybe smaller ones are alright."

Now? Build em. Build as many as you can. We won't see a significant drop in rent prices without them.

I dont think Ive been excited for a newspaper in Ptbo for a while. Arthur has been absolutely killing it lately. This is the type of scrappy local storytelling I always wanted to do.
Hi all! Our first issue of Volume 60 is finally at the printers, but in the meantime, we've got some community contributions you should definitely check out in this thread 🧵 ⤵️

No. Absolutely not.

We can't afford a $50+ million arena. There's homelessness on every street. I'm tired of the excuses from council. We can't afford a luxury like this when so many are struggling for the essentials. How much burden will council put on taxpayers to afford such vapid luxuries?

Major employers in #PTBO are laying off or shutting down. Rent rates are sky high and we aren't building new housing. Cost of living continues escalating.

At what point is the situation just completely messed up beyond repair?

Why aren't we embracing more radical solutions?

If I had a nickle for every time the city of #PTBO approved a new street design for Charlotte Street, I'd have enough nickles to buy a coffee from Dreams of Beans on the completely unrenovated Charlotte Street.

Leal is absolutely setting this up to flex his strong mayor powers and grant the police a 15% budget increase without the consent of council.

This flies in the face of municipal democracy itself. It's a shameful display of the unilateral power than Ford has allowed mayors to abuse.
Mayor Leal is saying two different figures in two different settings. I asked what his intentions were for the police budget, the use of strong-mayor powers, and what taxpayers can expect, but Leal and city staff did not respond.

Peterborough mayor won’t confirm if he’ll use strong-mayor powers to ensure 15% police budget hike
Extra spending in 2026 budget would necessitate a 7.44 per cent property tax increase next year.

Was pleased to see so many familiar faces at the memorial inauguration for those who died from occupational illness in #PTBO today.

It's a legacy our city continues to live with and has never fully reconciled.

The only context in which it's okay to say to someone you want to carve them up like a Thanksgiving turkey is when you say it to a Thanksgiving Turkey.

Shocking behaviour from a mayor who has shown an alarming lack of judgement in what comes from his mouth since being elected. #PTBO
I have been waiting to write this story for 14 months when I first broke the news that Leal had threatened Coun. Bierk during a public meeting. The IC's report goes further by investigating complaints about Leal's conduct behind closed doors, too.

I don't think it's actually a bad thing to pay #PTBO city councillors more. The pay they get for the amount of work required makes it so the position is only viable for retirees or folks with passive income like business owners.

The mayor, on the other hand? I think they're paid enough.

Congratulations to Emma Harrison. I look forward to her bringing respect and decorum back to our riding.
