This week, HHS announced it is freezing funding for child care and other family assistance programs in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York.

More than 500,000 children in over 44,000 programs could be impacted, with devastating effects for the economy: go.tcf.org/ChildCareFreeze
If Trump’s child care freeze is enacted: 156,000 mothers will be pushed out of the workforce and more than half a million children will lose access to care.

As @repstansbury.bsky.social said in today’s Oversight hearing, the admin’s attacks on child care are part of a larger effort to defund social services.

These attacks make child care more expensive for families, make children less safe, and make it harder for programs to stay open #FundChildCare

This @harpers.bsky.social piece exposes how America’s investor-owned electric utilities have engineered a profitable crisis at consumers’ expense, with excess profits of $50B+.

Energy and utility bills are not luxury goods. Those excess profits come directly from families who can’t afford them.

Republicans pushed through massive higher ed changes in 2025, expanding aid to short-term programs, limiting grad loans, & taxing wealthy colleges.

Now they’re targeting accreditation reform, but TCF’s Carolyn Fast warns it risks prioritizing culture wars over protecting students and federal funds.
College Costs, Accreditation Likely Top Focus for Congress
Republicans achieved a key victory in passing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and addressing a number of higher ed–related priorities last year. But more challenges loom in 2026.

It’s always strange to me that we accept the way the economy is talked about in terms of stock market or GDP or interest rates.

What I care about is how many people can’t afford housing, food, child care, or healthcare? If it’s more than zero, our economy is failing us
The reality of today’s economy is that major banks are reporting soaring profits while Americans are getting squeezed.
