That is definitely fair. It is bittersweet. Turning off is not really the reality in the world. #TLSkyChat

Also... as someone who has spent the last 10 years trying to help move #infolit instruction towards lessons that focus on how content is shared and engaged with on mobile devices, I have mixed feelings. HOWEVER, I can see the good coming from these policies already. #TLSkyChat

A8: 🕯️ Self-censorship is real. I rely on policy, peer review, & courage to keep fear from shaping shelves. Ground decisions in mission, not pressure. The harder part is Identifying your own purchasing biases is so important. Even unintentionally so. oif.ala.org #TLSkyChat

Agreed relationship are key and I also have found that using your procedures when having some of those difficult conversations with parents sometimes. Building that relationship is key. #TLSkyChat

A7: #1 for me is to get out of my office and go build/strengthen relationships with the people I serve. When they know me & I know them, all aspects of the work are easier. They know that I am a competent professional, I have experience, I am reliable, honest, & I do what I say I will do.

💬 #TLSkyChat A7: While the resources in thiis post could use updating, the strategies I wrote about still feel current. More and more, I feel the REAL work of navigating books challenges has to occur long before the papwerwork has been submitted.
A Proactive Approach to Book Challenges
Book challenges are on the rise. ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom, which tracks requests to remove materials from library shelves, reported in September that there had been a 60% increase in book ...

We definitely have been lucky that both of the policies many of the districts in NY purchase did work on separating the differences between library materials and classroom materials. #TLSkyChat

A6: My district's CD policy is fairly standard (circ. date, MUSTIE, librarian's discretion, etc.) and looks like the removal of titles no longer serving the current user group. I add an equitable lens on my policy, ensuring that positive representation remains regardless of stats. #TLSkyChat

A4: As a director of school librarians, I didn't have a library-but I advocate via my consultant business & website. I write articles for journals. I contribute chapters to books focusing on censorship. I tell my banned story in speeches. I lead by example w/a 24/7 threat of being banned. #TLSkyChat

#TLSkyChat A4. I just learned yesterday that a MS Tchr adapted the reading tracker I created for my #Rutgers Ss to include a column for kids to share whether or not they think the book is a mirror, window or sliding glass door. 🤯 I'm wondering how this idea might translate to an interactive display.

I've had the pleasure of teaching a Young Adult Literature course in the MLIS program at Rutgers University for several years now and, it's one of my favorite things. Although I don't get to teach it ...
