I lurked in this chat tonight (I - Kristin - am not a teacher or a librarian so I kept quiet) and it is a phenomenal resource for #nonfiction book recs! My kids and I have read some of them but I have so many more ideas for us now! (Thank you, #TLSkyChat)

That is a book that I continue to contemplate and think about. I also found the book The Sum of Us to be one that sticks in my head. #TLSkyChat

A1: I share my own reads with students too. One year I mentioned You Are a Badass to juniors and seniors, and it was checked out right away. Showing that vulnerability matters, and yes the audio is fab for modeling how we read too! #TLSkyChat

A8: The Professor and the Madman reshaped how I think about language and collaboration. It was a gateway book for Nonfiction for me. I admit I read mostly fiction until reading that title. Now it is part of my TBR!

A favorite of my students was Shoe Dog.

#TLSkyChat A8 💬 IMHO this title didn't get near enough love the year it came out! In Nearer My Freedom: The Interesting Life of Olaudah Equiano by Himself, Edinger and Younge use Olaudah Equiano's own writing to create blackout poems to craft the biography. It blew my mind!
Book cover of *The Interesting Life of Olaudah Equiano by Himself* adapted by Monica Edinger and Lesley Younge. The background is a colorful brick wall with some words blacked out, leaving the phrase “every day brought me nearer my freedom.” At the bottom left is an illustrated portrait of Equiano.

In particular PBL is making its return in NYS and social justice nonfiction really pair beautifully into such projects. #TLSkyChat

A7: I know I have mentioned a few earlier but I am a fan of them and social justice. Jarrow’s Red Madness, Slater’s Accountable, and Curious Cases: True Crime for Kids show how nonfiction can blend medical mystery, social justice, and true crime — great springboards for projects. #TLSkyChat

That is very true. The page number requirement was always such a sadness for me from teachers. Luckily as I developed relationship with those teachers I could gently make suggestions and thoughfulness in voice and choice. #TLSkyChat

#nonfiction books tend to have higher lexiles, from what I have been noticing #tlskychat. So that may win teachers over who only look at the number of pages.

A7: Nonfiction like Girls Think of Everything pairs perfectly with makerspace builds. Students can design their own inventions after reading. #TLSkyChat

Oh, my Oklahoma City Bombing picture book. 💔 I'm so proud of that one. Published right before Covid became a pandemic, and largely overlooked. But that story means so much to me. #TLSkyChat

A6: Some teachers required students to read nonfiction, and narrative nonfiction became a way in. Its variety amazes students and reminds them of the wonder they felt in elementary. Keeping the collection fresh and up to date is key. #TLSkyChat

#TLSkyChat A6 💬 One of my favorite workshops to lead takes place in a volunteer’s library. During the workshop, all the participants work together to weed the entire #nonfiction section w/a focus on making it more discoverable for our most vulnerable readers. More about my thoughts on weeding here.

These are favorites at my school! I have every variation on this series that I can find. We can't keep these on the shelves. Our readers also love the Totally Random Questions series. We have all 8 of them and they're super popular.

A6: My weeding looks at both circulation data and classroom needs. Nonfiction is tied closely to projects, so relevance matters. Accuracy is pivitol as well as relevancy #TLSkyChat
