Also... as someone who has spent the last 10 years trying to help move #infolit instruction towards lessons that focus on how content is shared and engaged with on mobile devices, I have mixed feelings. HOWEVER, I can see the good coming from these policies already. #TLSkyChat

💬 #TLSkyChat A8. Self censorship is antithetical to the core values of librarianship. This should be a full stop. AND I have also met librarians whose children have been stalked and threatened by radicalized community members. So... I hate self censorship. AND I understand why it happens.

100% I've helped district plan parent events focused on screen time and digital safety. These are great (and often safe) contexts to weave in conversations about how the info they see online (about books, libraries, etc) may be not be accurate and is 100% designed to influence/manipulate. #TLSkyChat

A7: Educate and inform the school community on the positives of diverse and inclusive literature through library communications. Ensure that your district has the proper reconsideration policies in place when a challenge does arise. Reading spaces are safe, make sure the all can see that! #TLSkyChat

A7: #1 for me is to get out of my office and go build/strengthen relationships with the people I serve. When they know me & I know them, all aspects of the work are easier. They know that I am a competent professional, I have experience, I am reliable, honest, & I do what I say I will do.

#TLSkyChat We are required to review & update our collection development policy annually based on district library regulations. Each library develops their own CDP. We review it w our admin. The 1st year my admin said he had no idea I did all that! They include access & intellectual freedom policies

This feels like a best practice for sure! Increasingly, I see districts including language to ensure that challenges are submitted by actual community members, as opposed to paid activists. #TLSkyChat

A6: Our collection development and reconsideration policies are set up to ensure no single person can remove a material without due process. The book stays in circulation until the process concludes, and many voices contribute at every level. We are transparent and communicative.

A6: My district's CD policy is fairly standard (circ. date, MUSTIE, librarian's discretion, etc.) and looks like the removal of titles no longer serving the current user group. I add an equitable lens on my policy, ensuring that positive representation remains regardless of stats. #TLSkyChat

I just learned yesterday that a MS Tchr adapted the reading tracker I created for my #Rutgers Ss to include a column for kids to share whether or not they think the book is a mirror, window or sliding glass door. 🤯 I'm wondering how this idea might translate to an interactive display.
