I think that's it, really. Pay your share of the room once everyone arrives at the hotel to check-in. Room owner may pay the full cost upfront themselves, but they re-imburse most of that cost later when everyone arrives. That's one guaranteed way to ensure it isn't a scam.

I suppose the only way to really protect yourself in that situation, is to room with trusted people only, or offer to pay for the share once you all occupants in a room arrive. A scammer will push urgency to pay now. Hotels can be paid on or after a con starts on day one.

I think the hardest cybersecurity tip is going to be about room bookings at conventions. Most cons won't handle room bookings on your behalf, and it is easy to reserve a room and use that as proof, only to cancel later when they've taken your money that you thought was your "share".

The Nigerian Furry scammers are easy to spot. One way I've detected them is their bio. They almost ALWAYS use cute emojis and cringe-worthy text Most I've seen show as having a Nigerian phone number in Telegram, but one I've had used a UK number.

When you paste the copied text you think you've copied, you mainly only see the text. But prepended and hidden away is a command that executes a payload and boom - everything stolen.

Another cybersecurity awareness tip, and this is aimed at furries: Nigerian "Furries".

You might have received a random DM from someone praising your fursona, and push you to commission them.

If even the slightest bit of doubt, ask your manager. Ask your IT team. Ask your security team. Might sound annoying, but cybercriminals are getting real smart these days. Don't let you be the reason everyone loses their job.

Since it is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, your employer may try to test your awareness skills. And if you fail, you'll likely go through additional training.

But in a real scenario, you could be the sole reason a company goes out of business.

Nobody wants that guilt.

To give an example of it in action, it can look similar to this screenshot. It looks legitimate, you may have seen it before in a legitimate way where CloudFlare's reCaptcha might ask you to solve a puzzle and nothing else. It's been cloned like-for-like to gain user trust. Be extremely cautious.

Not sure if many know, but considering it is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, this might just feel fitting.

If you ever come across a website that does a CloudFlare security prompt, and it asks you to "copy" something - DON'T. This is an attempt to get you to run malware. It's becoming more common.
