It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

"All is lost" narratives are popular because people generally do not want to take action. Taking action is tiring so if all is lost, you are off the hook. Nothing is more seductive than not having to do anything.

Very much looking forward to the coming wave of scientists in elected office.
Just checked in with the Santa Cruz city election office .. paperwork isn’t available yet, but I’m planning to run for District 6 City Council.

My personal fave will always be the time my research group wound up in @theonion.com. Greatest honor of our 30-year tenure? Perhaps.

This will raise how much you pay to drive your car for the next ten years. Every time you fill up at the pump, the price should've been lower, but it won't be, because of this. Also more kids and elderly people will get sick from air pollution. Analysis: Seems bad. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/03/c...

I love this idea so much: Washington Dept of Fish & Wildlife just released an anthology of poetry and art exploring how each of the state's ecoregions is being affected by climate change, and how fish & wildlife managers are responding.

I just ordered my copy.

This is abhorrent.

It's also hard not to see this as connected to the administration's push to expand extractive industries, including oil and gas — the report identifies associated "man camps" as a significant contributing factor to MMIW, and recommends mitigating actions for federal leases.

We talked about this in my class. People (& lenders!) need to have credible information about climate risk to their homes. However the way it is done right now, if at all, has lots of uncertainty. A home could be categorized as low-risk when it’s high risk, & vice versa! NOAA should do this service.
Realtors know that, in many parts of the country, if you educate people about climate risk, the housing market will collapse.

A reminder for those who are not aware: "remigration" is the process of deporting all non-white people from a country. It includes citizens and is, by definition, ethnic cleansing.

I realized I must have interrupted the perpetrator, who was now likely missing its meal. So I waited.
