"A library is nothing without its books, a museum is meaningless without its art. California’s natural landscapes are heading toward a similar fate. We are heading toward a future with our famous vistas still intact, yet with fewer of the native residents who once called them home."
California’s dying salmon test our environmental values. We’re flunking | Opinion

More than 1,000 staff members at the CDC were laid off Friday, affecting units that respond to infectious-disease outbreaks, analyze science and health data to develop policy, and monitor the safety of employees.
Mass CDC cuts hit staff dealing with measles, Ebola and disease forecasting
Another round of mass layoffs has struck CDC. The agency had already been cut during a reorganization this year, and more employees are now being shed amid the government shutdown.

The sage grouse has lost 80% of its numbers since 1965. Now the Trump Admin. wants to gut its last habitat protections in Wyoming’s Red Desert—the densest population left on Earth. “If there’s a lot, we take a lot; if there’s a little, we take it all.”

This is a solid retrospective on the epic fight to keep the Pacific Northwest from becoming a global coal export hub. We won through relentless organizing, brilliant political strategy, and focused legal work. Glad its getting some attention.

Washington turned back coal, maybe for good
A coal terminal, proposed for Longview, failed. Underplaying how much coal would really be exported to the terminal was the plan's proponents' first mistake.

A park employee, who spoke with SFGATE on the condition of anonymity to protect their job, said they know of only one wilderness ranger working the entire park. And technically, that person is not even a ranger, the employee said, but a volunteer.

Will any powerful institution fight fiercely against tyranny?

This is unprecedented partisan politicization of a public land agency website. I admit chuckling at the sinister irony of “three cheers for volunteers” amidst a shutdown. Lack of agency staff - like for endangered species critical habitat enforcement - risks real to harm our most vulnerable species.
