Speaking of voices under attack…can we be just as loud about Black journalists and comedians who are silenced, even by our so-called liberal outlets.

Ultimately, these options are not hard to think about, or exceptionally expensive.

What is required is actual will to change. A real interest in the well-being of those who are not like you.

Even if you disagree with my suggestions, why not ask Black and Brown people how to help?

The judges can't be all/overwhelmingly white and middle class, and yet tell us it's some kind of level playing field.

Find a way to understand that there are many, many kinds of storytelling traditions and open up to those possibilities.

I mean, I'll take a quarter of a million pounds advance, don't get me wrong. Bring it on. But I won't deceive myself that it helps the lot of anybody but myself because it doesn't.

Open up opportunities for meeting people in all stages of publication. Let's meet booksellers and editors and, yes, agents, and so on.

Publishing is overwhelmingly white and, I'm sorry, but you all don't always understand the stories you receive. Even the most well-travelled of you.
More people behind the scenes with lived experience would help.

Here are some actionable suggestions if publishers want to actually help Black and Brown writers (rather than some publicity stunt that helps one or two people, gives a pat on the head to the publisher, and does nothing for anybody else).

1. Actively hire more Black and Brown people in publishing.
