I was like 70% through silksong when I finally discovered the NPC that upgrades your weapon. I had beaten several mid-game bosses by that point.

I was in a call with a friend, and when they realized I had been playing on base damage this whole time, all they said was "You frighten me."

I was able to save my progress after each level by progressing the the next day, and if I died I just reloaded my day! It was still really hard though and I had to get lucky with the items i got!
