I hear you. The new embedded “news features” on the LBC app seems to be a new way to “form opinion” with their listeners.

It’s a smart business model. It’s designed to keep people engaged with the station.

Natasha deserves her own daily show if she wants it. She’s fantastic.

I enjoyed the #VictoriaBeckham “doco” on #Netflix.

There! I said it.

Every time someone makes me read something Peter Thiel said it’s like “Scrooge McDuck is Jesus Christ and Huey, Dewey, and Louie are Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel and Daisy is Mary Magdalene and that’s why women voting has lowered American sperm count.”

I’m dying from some sort of cold. It kicked off on Saturday morning early. Very sore throat and now it’s as if my blood has turned to snot. Hopefully you’ve just caught a cold and not the dreaded ‘Vid. 🤞

It’s a bit of a ballache. Japan entry for non-residents also involves retina scan and digital fingerprint recognition. Once you’re on the system your processing time is much faster so long as you complete your entry card for immigration and customs via the app. I assume Schengen will do same.

#PeterThiel believes that #Luffy is a “Christ-like” figure, and he completely misinterprets #AlanMoore’s phenomenal #Watchmen. This man is a fucking twat of the highest order. And he’s dangerous.

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

And anime. Don’t forget anime. 😉

I got my flu and Covid shot last weekend. I didn’t notice any wooziness later that evening which is what normally happens. I’ve come down with a flipping cold this weekend and I feel like my blood has turned to snot. 🤧

It’s true: the cities are lawless and scary, if you live here sell your property as fast as possible, particularly if you have a 2 family row house from the 1920s with those nice bay windows.

Translators. Real human ones. Are really fucking important. They help us to understand each other. An expense worth bearing don’t you think?🤔

László Krasznahorkai's English-language reputation has been built through the work of his key translators, George Szirtes and Ottilie Mulzet and John Batki.

So let's praise them too!

While I was part of the Funimation Global team i believe that the product and tech group was carefully evaluating the various players we had: AnimeLab, Wakanim, FuniNow. I left in early 2021, and I never understood why they didn't switch everything to AnimeLab. It was robust as f***.
theaccidentalotaku.bsky.social
The best anime player I ever used was Madman's "Anime Lab" app, which Sony inherited following Aniplex's acquisition of Madman Anime and eventual consolidation into the Crunchyroll, Llc vertical. It was a bespoke player built from scratch in-house by the Australian company.

I need LinkedIn for work, so I have to be mindful of my p’s and q’s and f’s that rhyme with “Yahtzee.”
theaccidentalotaku.bsky.social
It was a more otaku c-suite than what we have today. Gen was gearing up Funi for sale for many years, and he brought in experienced studio execs to help make that happen. Smart and decent ppl, but they have a different mentality to indie-minded franpreneurs of yore. They know how to play the game.
theaccidentalotaku.bsky.social
One thing worth considering is that Crunchyroll acquires a lot of content. “There’s a fan for every show” right? Acquisition costs are skyrocketing. This likely means costs must come down elsewhere.
theaccidentalotaku.bsky.social
Wow! That was amazing. Thanks Geoff. Crunchyroll don’t hire from the community anymore. We could tell Sony Pictures c-suite felt uncomfortable around the veteran anime franpreneurs they inherited when they acquire MangaUK, WaKanim, Madman etc. None of us are in the group anymore. 🤷‍♂️
