Straight from a Google Gemini 2.0 Flash marketing email:

Get ready for many actionable insights, a productivity boost, and the seamless experience of… well, doing things seamlessly.

Screenshot of a Google Gemini marketing email uploaded to the ick app, which highlights overly generic and exaggerated language. Words like 'actionable insights,' 'boost,' and 'seamlessly' are flagged. The app includes different modes like Dyslexia Friendly and Lightbox.

Which industry buzzwords would you like to banish?

In April 2024, a few words like "delve" had a viral moment, when researchers pointed out that GPT-4 used it often, demonstrating that the spread of the word showed AI in science papers.

Did that result in a decrease in AI use in scientific writing? No, but people started avoiding the word "delve!"

Some of the reasoning people give for preferring lowercase is interesting.

It cracks me up that it says young adults announce on TikTok they’ve turned on auto-capitalization as a sign of maturity.
The death of capital letters: why gen Z loves lowercase
Young people have ditched capitalisation in favour of a writing style that reflects their values and attitudes to tradition. Will this change our language for ever?

Screenshot of the ick writing app. The interface highlights flagged words in a sentence: “all-in-one” (red), “platform” (blue), “actionable” (yellow), and “frameworks” (blue). A left-side menu includes options like “Dyslexia Friendly,” “Serif Switch” (selected), and “Lightbox,” along with copy and download buttons. The design is minimalist with a light background and black text.

Avoid jargon and buzzwords whenever possible. When you have to use terms that might not be commonly known or used among your audience, explain what these terms mean. If you can't avoid a lot of specific terms, include a glossary of terms that users can refer to when needed.

I spent several hours on it yesterday while crafting sales page copy and I absolutely LOVED my experience. The UI is sleek and beautiful. The feedback is useful while also bringing a smile to my face with the engaging and creative responses. I've already started telling my clients about it. 🤘🫶

We’re writing a little history of the word ick and the feeling of the ick. And this is a really great point. Will make sure we emphasise this point, and give you a shout out 🙌

“The ick” has ALWAYS existed. It is not some “women are so picky nowadays” 21stC post-feminist caprice. Cecil Vyse gives Lucy Honeychurch the TOTAL ick in Room With A View (1908). You don’t get to police other people’s tastes. Marmite gives me the ick, but I’m not claiming that’s Marmite’s fault

Happy Valentine's Day ❤️
A love letter to marketing jargon, dripping in buzzwords. The ick app interface highlights phrases like ‘best in class,’ ‘next-gen,’ and ‘cutting-edge’—the usual suspects of overblown copy. Set against a bold pink background, it’s a valentine to the kind of language that promises everything and says nothing.
