So long story short: Yes and no.
In very FFXIV fashion, my WoLs are slaves of destiny, beasts unleashed by their masters and their instincts, but I do have a higher degree of free will thanks to my multiple-WoL style of playing. They can choose to not do certain stuff and they decide it at the spot.

The way my OC's stories unfolded is the same way I write stories in my books:
I have a theme, a conflict and an overall story thought out, but my characters have a distinct personality that allows me to improvise during that story (similar to roleplaying in DnD).
