Check out this great thread on our just-published paper on the cross-cultural interpretation of speech pauses! We found that the cognitive states associated with long vs. short pauses before giving an answer in a conversation are strikingly similar across cultures 🏄 The paper is open access 🔓

▶️ Paired with e.g. qualitative annotations of specific communicative strategies, our findings may help to explain the development of shared communicative conventions. #iconicity #conventionalisation
thematzing.bsky.social
📊 According to our predictions, participants showed a shift from whole-body pantomimes to more economical and specialised manual gestures: 1. hand & arm movement increased 📈, 2. the path and volume of the moved articulators decreased 📉 🙆🙅‍♂️🙌🤲👋

⚙️Across four rounds of of a communication game, participants had to use whole-body pantomimes to communicate and guess a set of transitive actions. They were dressed in #MoCap suits to record their movements
thematzing.bsky.social
💡 Gestural and pantomimic hypotheses in language evolution research highlight the need for communicative efficiency, leading to the evolution of reduced, less costly forms of communication over time. We tested this in a motion-capture study 🦾
thematzing.bsky.social
Starting with a 🧵 about our latest paper on the evolution of pantomime 🚨 hot off the press in the Journal of Language Evolution. Happy to be part of the team led by Marek Placiński! It's also the first #motioncapture paper of the CLES NCU lab! academic.oup.com/jole/advance...
