I just typed the same thing. I’ve been hit by that scam so many times.

This is the best gift to customs scammers ever.

Some properly aimed frustration might be understandable but it’s all aimed the wrong way: at a hardworking DA and our vulnerable communities.

But nothing good comes of this. There is no good in dictatorial flex.

Yes, our cops had been throwing a tantrum. Asked to be better following the murder of Tyree Nichols they just quit doing their jobs. Instead of being judicious about traffic stops, they just quit. Drive out tags proliferated. 3/4 in our family were in hit and runs with drive out taggers etc.

my boldness and bravery stops short of naked bike riding for now. But maybe if I acquired a more accommodating seat…

Not always large, but dogged. And it’s a federal occupation in any case.

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.

Spookiest Frankenstein adaptation this season.

The idea that we have opening fronts without correspondents seems weird. But maybe we’ve all got correspondents and… location bias, etc.

Maybe the sound of helicopters just has me on edge.
thepeskyfly.bsky.social
Willing to believe this is location bias mixed with me missing things. But I don’t see any increased media presence.

Am I hallucinating or is the Memphis occupation receiving considerably less national attention than literally everywhere else? Folks are getting snatched here too! I know Portland is fascinating and we’ve got some crime and our mayor rolled over but c’mon !

The idea of British police made the future Bogside Republicans uncomfortable, nevertheless, a sincere hope prevailed that the Brits were more fair, and better equipped to protect them from the threat of Protestant violence than local authority. This hope proved to be badly misplaced.
thepeskyfly.bsky.social
When I see Memphians who are very clearly not MAGA Republicans expressing hope that something good might come from a Federal occupation, I’m reminded of similarly high-minded hopes held by Irish Catholics in the Bogside at the dawn of the troubles.

There's one huge difference between the 2025 Portland protests & the ones in 2020. Today, the ~100 anti-fascist protesters at the ICE facility are sandwiched between the feds who have MAGA-friendly media embedded w/ them, and ~15 MAGA-friendly content creators/counter-protesters out in the crowd.

As President Trump tries to send the National Guard to Portland, Oregon, conservative influencers are working to support his claim that the city is burning with viral clips from one block. https://wapo.st/4q5HM0n

I was trying to put my finger on what bothered me about this portrayal and I think it’s that it just takes the guy’s words at face value, like he was a nice guy and reaction to Charlie Kirk’s death just pushed him over the edge www.nytimes.com/2025/10/12/u...

Stop calling for resignations and start calling for arrests.

Sens. Schumer, Merkley, Murray, and Peters are calling for the resignation of OMB Director Russell Vought.

"By impounding billions of dollars … and aggressively pursuing the illegal use of pocket rescissions, Vought has done everything in his power to gut the federal government piece by piece."

Help me out here. When did Biden take office? Who was the FBI director on January 6th? Who appointed that FBI director?

Reporting the absence of determinate information may not be a best practice but people do love a mystery to unravel.

Agree with Amanda that journalists have to bait their hooks with interest but don’t know why “lying or dementia” is a worse hook than picking one. That we can’t know is also a dent in Trump’s “most transparent ” narrative, no?
“We don’t know WTF’s wrong with this guy,” seems fair. And honest.

'One influencer, for instance, accuses the Portland police chief of “allowing violent terrorists” to “run the city,” which is horseshit of the highest order.'

Careful and powerful analysis by @gregsargent.bsky.social of the New York Times treating Trump's propagandists as "provocateurs" and decision to treat MAGA's ideologically-driven lies as part of a legitimate clash of perspectives in describing Portland.

There’s a lot of fingerpointing RE whose rhetoric is responsible for our late precarity and this factoid can orient you when the propaganda gets thick and you don’t know which way is up.

To paraphrase Barbara F. Walter, Civil wars are rarely started by oppressed groups; they are started by privileged groups who rightly or wrongly believe they are losing status.
