Any other writers have journals filled with notes and planning that they just never revisit? Sometimes I really need the paper + pen to organize my thoughts before proceeding, and then I never look back at those notes once I've unraveled the knot and resume writing 😂 #writesky #writingcommunity

For paid work, I do agree a pro would be able to do great work, so long as whoever wrote their brief actually gave them enough context and information on the subject to make a believable piece! 👍🏼

When I used to go to cons, there was always artists who’d just tossed up fanart of popular animes because it was another thing to sell, not because they cared at all. It was clear and always left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Looking back at the post again, if this is specifically about contract illustration work, then you’d hope the contractor would give enough context so the art is done well! I was looking at more of a fanart angle when I first posted.

Now if this is about a specific beef going around, I know nothing about it! But missing context and nuance can be part of why it’s off-putting for artists to do a thing for a fandom they’re not in. Additionally, a lack of connection to the community can be felt both ways, as artist and viewer.

So sometimes it’s really clear and feels disingenuous for someone to just do art of “the fun thing” because all the context is missing. It makes the art, and by extension the character, flatter.

I think the difference is that a cabbage doesn’t have personality, lore, and an entire storyline that accompanies it. A cabbage is, most likely in art, just a cabbage! But a character can’t just be a visual design, in the case of an IP, because there’s more that accompanies it and humanizes it.
