A disco-kid+80s music nerd & writer here to help you embrace your secret love for 70s and 80s dance music. Each week, I share the stories of artists you know and those you think you don’t. Fair warning: a dose of sarcasm, puns, and dry humor is inevitable!
A day late, but happy 62nd to Claudia Brücken — the voice of Propaganda. “Dr. Mabuse” (1983) floored me the first time I heard it. Trevor Horn at peak power.
What's your favourite Propaganda song?

Ariola America was one of those short-lived disco labels of the late ’70s/early ’80s. They pinned big hopes on Taka Boom (Chaka Khan’s sister), who cut one album for them

How did three Belgians calling themselves “Two” Man Sound end up making one of the best disco records of 1979? And why did everyone assume they came from somewhere in South America, anywhere but Belgium?
This week’s post about a record you probably know, with a backstory you almost certainly don’t!

Remember that iconic “Say Whaaaaaaat” from this 1979 gem? 😁 One of the biggest hits Salsoul ever had.

There is a reason I’m dropping a summer track while winter rolls in: I need some warm vibes.

Start with the sunshine of Two Man Sound’s “Que Tal America.”

Plenty of time later to dive back into your Christmas-music OCD 🎄✨

Hot Chocolate, the band that never really saw themselves as disco (even though they made quite a few excellent disco records), hit #1 on the UK dance chart on this day exactly 50 years ago with this absolute gem.

What’s your favourite Hot Chocolate “disco” track?

The Beach Boys are one of those legacy pop acts who got scorched in the post-disco backlash — all because of their disco turn with “Here Comes the Night.”
But in spring ’79, just months before Disco Sucks, they were still full of optimism, with CBS pushing them in the trades.

This one didn’t hit No. 1 on the Billboard dance chart in 1999 — it did that 17 years earlier 😂

On this day in 1982, we were dancing our asses off to this Prince classic.

The UK dance chart has had its share of unusual No. 1s, like this day in 1976, when Leo Sayer began a three-week run at the top with a track that’s not quite disco, not quite a ballad, but something in between. Time for some very slow dancing with “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing.”

By 1979, disco had turned into a full-blown industry, and hardware companies were eager to cash in. Music-trade magazines became prime real estate for reaching DJs and professionals.

Tomorrow on The Twelve Inch: a deep dive into one of Belgium’s most unlikely disco exports, an underground late-70s club hit spun at The Warehouse, The Loft, and Paradise Garage.
Everyone thought it was Latin. It was actually made in Brussels by a trio called… Two Man Sound (= Belgian humour)

Blondie had to wait a few years before cracking the charts at home. Their breakthrough finally came in early 1979 with…a disco song: “Heart of Glass.” Here’s one of the earliest ads Chrysalis used to promote the single in U.S. music-trade publications.

Remember this one? A big hit in 1984, and a dancefloor favorite on both sides of the Atlantic. On this day 41 years ago, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard dance charts. Do you remember any of Alphaville’s other hits? And which one was your favourite?

Sometimes you hear a track and can’t believe it’s already 40 years old.
Sheila E.’s “A Love Bizarre” hit #1 on the Billboard Club Play Dance Chart on this day in 1985.
Personally, I’ve always preferred “The Glamorous Life.”

40 years ago today, Aretha Franklin hit #1 on the Billboard Club Play chart with “Who’s Zoomin’ Who.”
One of my favourites from that era — not because it’s a masterpiece, but because it was so much fun to mix. Great intro, great break.

Most big artists who jumped on disco in the late ’70s didn’t survive the backlash. But Barbra Streisand did, and she came out winning.
This week I’m digging into her short but powerful 1979 disco era.

The original hit No. 1 back in 1976, thanks to Vicki Sue Robinson.

Eighteen years later, to the day, Gloria Estefan took it back to the top.

Yesterday, we lost one of the most soulful and distinctive voices of ’80s dance music. Richard Darbyshire, the voice behind Living In A Box, has passed away at the age of 65. His music will live on, and that iconic song will stay with us forever.

Rest in peace, Richard.

43 years ago, the Billboard Dance chart had a new No. 1, one that wouldn’t make it onto every radio playlist. A little too risqué for some. But on the dancefloor? They couldn’t get enough!
