A disco-kid+80s music nerd & writer here to help you embrace your secret love for 70s and 80s dance music. Each week, I share the stories of artists you know and those you think you don’t. Fair warning: a dose of sarcasm, puns, and dry humor is inevitable!
1979: the next decade’s stars are already forming. Rick James is Motown’s big hope, and his late-70s disco-funk is unreal. The title track is fire, and when the “Aah bang bang” hits on Love Gun, I’m gone. Motown even ran a full-colour double-spread ad.

Ariola America was one of those short-lived disco labels of the late ’70s/early ’80s. They pinned big hopes on Taka Boom (Chaka Khan’s sister), who cut one album for them

Remember that iconic “Say Whaaaaaaat” from this 1979 gem? 😁 One of the biggest hits Salsoul ever had.

The Beach Boys are one of those legacy pop acts who got scorched in the post-disco backlash — all because of their disco turn with “Here Comes the Night.”
But in spring ’79, just months before Disco Sucks, they were still full of optimism, with CBS pushing them in the trades.

By 1979, disco had turned into a full-blown industry, and hardware companies were eager to cash in. Music-trade magazines became prime real estate for reaching DJs and professionals.

Blondie had to wait a few years before cracking the charts at home. Their breakthrough finally came in early 1979 with…a disco song: “Heart of Glass.” Here’s one of the earliest ads Chrysalis used to promote the single in U.S. music-trade publications.

In preparation for tomorrow’s episode about the 1979 Hi-NRG disco track we’ll be exploring, you’ll need the right gear.

So grab your boxing gloves, because tomorrow we’re gonna fight, fight, fight…

Any guesses which song and artist I’ll be diving into?

The moment America was introduced to Patrick Juvet. I get the makeup. I even get the chest hair. But the ice skates? 😂 Ah, the wonderful world of 1978 disco. #disco #eurodisco #music #musicsky

Tomorrow I’m diving into why one of my disco favorites—who had four Billboard dance #1s—never broke through like Donna Summer or Gloria Gaynor.

Any guesses who it is? And which track I’ll focus on?

Tomorrow I’m heading to the land of the rising sun for the next episode of The Twelve Inch newsletter. Any guesses which artist or band I’ll be covering? Bonus points if you can name the song too 😁 (though I doubt I’ll get many right answers)

The Starchild. The Demon. The Spaceman. The Catman.

Ring any bells? 🎭 If you know the band, can you also guess which song is coming up in tomorrow’s Twelve Inch post? Keep these two products close by, they might come in handy…

Look what the postman brought! The new 5-CD edition of one of my fave ’80s albums: Climie Fisher’s Everything. They should’ve called it the Nerdy Edition—tons of extended mixes, remixes, and dub versions. My (nerdy) Friday soundtrack is set! 🤓 #music #eightiesmusic #musicsky

Tomorrow's episode of TheTwelveInch: A band’s lead singer nearly wrecked her ‘67 Volvo hearing their hit debut on radio. It topped pop, R&B & dance charts—a rare trifecta! So "if you’re thinking you’re too cool to boogie," think again! Guess the song? #disco #music #musicsky

Just finished tomorrow’s The Twelve Inch! We’re heading to 1977, arguably disco’s best year, with a club and pop hit that was ahead of its time. Guess who? Signed to TK Records, but born in Chicago, not Miami. Any ideas? 🎶🔥 #disco #vinyl #music #musicsky

Tomorrow, I’ll share the story of a game-changing ‘80s dance track—the song that introduced me to electro and still rocks my sets. The artist started by scoring a porn film and got robbed of all proceeds from this hit. Any guesses on the track and artist? #music #musicsky

In Episode 150 of The Twelve Inch tomorrow, I explore the first-ever No. 1 on the U.S. Dance Charts (Oct 1974). This track introduced a legendary remixer, helped birth the 12-inch single, and became a hit without radio or label support. Any idea which song I'll be discussing ? #music #musicsky

55 years ago today, Moog Music launched the Minimoog, a compact, affordable version of the modular Moog. Musicians feared it could harm livelihoods and even considered a ban. Instead, the Minimoog sparked the rise of electronic (dance) music, reshaping music history. #musicsky #music
