The right-wing has been priming Americans to think of population wide gains in freedom and equality as potentially ill-gotten; a theft against those who are already living with a full suite of rights. It's why attacks on DEI work. The Dems/the left must emphasize that this is a theft of Civil Rights

It's also notable how manufactured this whole panic has been. DEI can be a little silly but it's been a fixture at American corporations since the 1990s. The only reason we're all talking about it constantly is that right-wing media decided to pretend it was left-wing tyranny.

The Dems should start a site where every transgression is documented, alongside the legal remedy that will be applied when they take back power. Lay the groundwork now, rally the public behind the promise of retribution, and maybe get some people to think twice about their actions.

What culminated in the summer of 2020 was so seismic that it gave the Right all of the energy it needed to set the county back hundreds of years; Dems did some play-acting like they cared, and then went about trying to re-stitch a status quo that inspired so much rebellion in the first place.

Elite focus is never on the thing that’s the problem; instead, the fixation is on how we’re talking about the thing, or how that thing is being protested, or who’s doing the protesting. This puts distance, purposefully I’d say, between a problem and its solution.

the virtue signalling vs. not discussion just strikes me as a social drama that makes sense within the class of people that don't think they have anything else at stake in these discussions other than clout, some of whom also can't imagine any other way of relating to these discussions

We really need to be thinking abt the current regime through the lens of the Second Klan, which helped to nationalize systems of Jim Crow state & vigilante violence & exploitation while creating an explicitly white nationalist immigration system. They even paraded down Pennsylvania Ave.

An important thing to keep in mind as discussions about left wing vs right wing terrorism become more salient: there is no mainstream LW media apparatus, let alone institutional leadership, that seeks to inspire violence against its opponents. No good faith accounting can say the same about the RW.

When the president deputizes right wing thugs their violence is no longer classified as terrorism. So of course it looks like left wing violence is increasing. Extralegal right wing violence is now just policy. ICE is shooting pepper balls and kidnapping people as I type this.

There’s also the question of what kind of feeling you’re stimulating. Most people don’t obsess over these matters. When they hear “immigration is a mess” that stimulates one kind of feeling. When they hear “immigrants are our friends,” another. The latter is what slows fascism by the way.

Accepting every MAGA premise on “immigration” has moral costs, but assuming they’re all Savvy Trolly Problem Knowers, they should at least acknowledge it has **political downsides as well**. That it alienates many and makes counter messaging impossible because you look like total phony hypocrites.
