The right-wing has been priming Americans to think of population wide gains in freedom and equality as potentially ill-gotten; a theft against those who are already living with a full suite of rights. It's why attacks on DEI work. The Dems/the left must emphasize that this is a theft of Civil Rights
It's also notable how manufactured this whole panic has been. DEI can be a little silly but it's been a fixture at American corporations since the 1990s. The only reason we're all talking about it constantly is that right-wing media decided to pretend it was left-wing tyranny.

This is the decimation of truth, in the sense that the acquisition and the spread of new knowledge are being kneecapped, and also the fracturing of camaraderie and spirit, in the sense that fewer people will connect over such pursuits. Simply evil.
Nearly every mechanism that made my career possible—Ford, NSF, Harvard BiGS—is gone or on the way to the chopping block.
This means NSF dissertation improvement grants in the social sciences are simply...not happening.

They’re trying to break it all; whatever supports increasingly just societies stands in opposition to the conservative political project.

They're trying to break the pipeline for future social science research.

"There are no current DDRIG grants available for any discipline in the Directorate for Social Behavioral and Economic Sciences, as it appears that the NSF has archived—which means cancelled—the DDRIG grants in every SBE field"

If you don’t know how to fight for the rights of the vulnerable and marginalized, you don’t know how to fight for rights at all. Total liberation is strategically clear, and morally imperative.

Truly appreciate @dennycarter.bsky.social’s pushback on the usage of the term “crackdowns.” Applied to everything that authoritarians want to criminalize, including houselessness, it makes the innocent criminal by implication, and implies aggression as the solution. The results are clear, and evil.

White supremacy isn't just the overtly vile stuff; it's also trying to dictate the terms of argument, agreement, and liberation.

Setting aside this writer’s and the NYT’s agendas and motivations, what this kind of political writing does is legitimatize liars, bigots, propagandists, and authoritarians/fascists. Point blank. We are living in the result of such moral vacuousness.
What a strange framing and characterization. How does one describe his blatantly dishonest, racist question about taxes as “press[ing] the Mayor-elect on his policy proposals”? In what way does this lying troll emerge as a “winner“?

It's one crisis after another in America, but it doesn't have to be this way. If we're truly concerned with liberation and the pursuit of individual and collective well-being, white conservatism is a destabilizing force, period. This has to be broadly understood, accepted, and dealt with.
Given the way white conservative lawlessness forms a *defining feature* of what has been called democracy in the U.S., something we desperately need coming out of this current crisis is a body of history more directly critical of the state in the U.S., esp pre-1960s.

Was enjoying this immensely until I laughed so hard I almost choked on my peanut butter and banana sandwich. Maybe that’s how humankind learned to eat and laugh at the same time.
Episode 46: Sapiens

It's an ambitious goal to write the entire history of humanity in just 400 pages. It's even more ambitious to do it without reading any research.

Vaccinations being part of a *collective* public health effort is precisely why fascists want to undermine them.
The fixation on individual habits, all obvious enough, is meant to fracture solidarity, laying the obligations of the state, and the blame for its failures and negligence, on each of us. Thus, an atmosphere ripe for fascism evolves.
