However, it seems much more likely that this was a conscious design choice to use harder red sandstone on the ground flooor, where most wear was likely to occur, and the softer blonde sandstone above.

Two-tone tenements on Clifford Street in the Ibrox area of Glasgow. Local legend has it this effect is due to the builders running out of one colour of sandstone and completing the building with another.

Carmunnock Parish Church in Glasgow. Rebuilt in the 1760s, it's possibly based on a pre-reformation religious site. The main entrance is through the small door under the stairs, while the stairs themselves lead up to one of the upper galleries.

Good morning Glasgow. Autumn is well and truly underway in the city, and as you can see from this shot of Kelvin Way this morning, the turning leaves are adding a much needed splash of colour to the rapidly shortening days

The Faience Corridor of Glasgow City Chambers. Ten feet wide and one hundred feet long, every inch of its walls and domed ceilings are adorned with glazed decorative ceramic tiles.

This plaque has been around for a while, but I passed it a few times while training for last weekend's Great Scottish Run, and it always makes me smile when I do, so I thought I'd post it again. It's on a wall beside the Maryhill Locks in Glasgow.

These buildings were constructed in a variety different styles, mostly over approximately an 80 year period (from the mid-1800s to the 1930s) and yet they still come together to form a single united streetscape that is uniquely Glaswegian.

I love this Art Nouveau style peacock stained glass window on Fitzroy Place in Glasgow. The door handle is pretty special, too.

This includesrecessed corner bay windows, a lantern on a feature corner roof, and sweeping curved lines. If we could do this as recently as a couple of decades ago, why are so many new builds in the city now just generic boxes with no local flavour?

Saint Ninian Terrace in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. While this is a relatively new building (dating from the 1990s), it incorporates a number of classic characteristics of Glasgow's traditional architecture.

Somewhat surprisingly, despite being a strongly Christian society, most architectural sculptures in Victorian Glasgow were instead inspired by other cultures, such as ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Persian, and even northern European pagan mythologies. The exact reasons for this are unclear.

Attributed by James Young, this is one of the few achitectural sculptures with an overtly biblical inspiration in the city's Victorian financial district.

I love the repeating patterns in this 1870s building on the corner of Hope Street and Bothwell Street in Glasgow. It was designed by Peddie and Kinnear, and was originally meant to be the hotel for Central Station.
