Ten shots in.
Having fun.
Wake up on the curb
outside my house.
What happened?

A needle in a vein.
Nothing matters.
Wake up in a squat,
breathing among the dead.
What happened?

Pills washed
down my throat.
Don’t want to wake up.
Do anyway.
What happened?

Get clean.
Try a steady life.
Monotonous routines.
Wake up
and I’m fifty.

What happened?

NEW YEAR’S 2026

Beyond the nocturnal
glow of urbane light, disabled
clocks and phone calendars, failed
notifications and morbid warnings
accumulate in uncivil space,
a barren avoidance,
the obdurate stillness,
a pencil case of pines, obliging
God’s hidden hand to write to us
love letters in the morning sky
that the warbler reads aloud
over our flannel shoulders.

Your Money or Your Life

He’s standing before me,
Face much too close to mine
And although he hasn’t actually uttered the words
That’s the implication
That’s the stark choice

I pause to weigh it up
Do I face his arrogant demands?
Or do I face the consequences of defying him?

I look him in the eye
My decision is inevitable really
I choose life
He can stuff his stupid job

I walk out of the office without a backward glance

smoking and drinking
in 2025

should have given up
that shit
in 1985

other people died
in your world
you were the fittest survivor

eschewing the hoax of Affordable Care
when healthy
on the outside

no premiums
no copays
no coverage

no doctors no nurses
no hospitals
in driving distance

nobody knew
healthcare
was so complicated

as death becomes your familiar
are you pleased
with your choices

are you happy
you voted
for Trump

back when i didn't know
there was even such a thing
as silk flowers

where does a thirteen years old
get forty quid from anyway?
no way that your mum
has that kind of money spare

new job at the chippie
not just for this

no
of course not

forty quid’s worth
of fryer-grease moisturiser
and a constant spritz
of salt and vinegar aftershave
for silk flowers
that the girl
who never looks at you twice
will immediately
throw in the bin

Old Holborn

My Dad had a dead imp
In an old tobacco tin
He kept it under lock and key
In the shed out back
My mother wouldn’t allow it in the house
He seldom let us see it
If we found him working in the shed
And pleaded with him for long enough
He would prize the lid off the tin
Revealing the little wizened creature within
Its ribs visible under shrivelled leather skin
Yellow teeth peeping between grimaced lips

Was it a mouse?
No tail
Was it a bat?
No wings
Where did he get it?
His grandfather found it
Under a sourapple tree
No more questions
He snapped the lid tight closed

Clearing out the shed after he died
I found that old tobacco tin
I took it home and opened it up
To examine the shut fast sunken eyes
The clawed fingers
The tiny strands of coppery hair

Here’s the tin, see
I left it open that night
On the kitchen table
I climbed the stairs to bed, alone
And never saw that imp again

But sometimes when the house falls silent
I hear a scratching and a shuffling
And, every now and then
A tiny rattling laughter
