My daughter was talking to my wife and I about lockdown drills at her school, and at one point she said

"It's like a game of hide and seek, but you can only play once if you die."

This broke my heart. We live in a sick society, and I dont know if their is a cure.

I was born in Portland, but I lived between Sandy and Brightwood from age 3 to age 18. Rural areas can be quite frightening due to isolation and locals' mindsets. But the population density is vastly lower, so I feel safer in that regard. The street criminal foot traffic is basically nonexistent.

That's an average, but my life is poverty and bad neighborhoods. I lived in South Tabor for 7 months back in 2020, within 1,000 feet of a school; there was effectively zero crime there. I also had a warehouse job then instead of delivery, and I was dating a woman in Camas... I encountered no crime.

Oh my God, I just remembered there was ANOTHER active shooter event outside my apartment when two turf-warring pimps had a gun fight. Me and my Amazon Flex driving neighbor went outside to check on our cars when it was over to make sure they hadn't taken bullets, and that we still had work vehicles.

There are safer and more dangerous sections of Portland, but the problem is the dangerous elements are mobile, if not outright nomadic. So I do feel safer if I'm delivering in, say, the Reed district, but I never actually feel SAFE. Especially at night, it feels like The Walking Dead out there.

...in the last 5 years in Montavilla, I've witnessed multiple overdoses (including deaths), this is where my cars were stolen, neighbors have had their cars broken into and converters stolen, I've heard gunshots fairly consistently, and witnessed an active shooter below my apartment window.

... I would add the Broadway & MLK 7-11 and the Nicolai St 7-11. I always make sure to park so I can see my car from inside the store. I live in Montavilla, and do the same parking at home. Montvilla is BAD...

In the last 16 years in Portland, I've been mugged/beaten, obviously followed on foot by muggers four times, nearly assaulted picking up from 2nd Ave Subway, two cars stolen, almost abducted in a white van, threatened with violence thrice, and assaulted with a motor vehicle. I'm now disabled + PTSD.

3rd & Harvey Cart Pod after 10 PM is a nightmare. 11th & Jefferson is sketchy AF, the whole Park Blocks. Burnside, McDonald's and 2nd Ave especially. Insurance scam drivers trying to trap/hit cars.

I act as a shield in my delivery role, so I do see what customers are (understandably) hiding from.

It's gotten so rowdy and dangerous on some recent shifts in downtown Portland at night that I've made a point to go to Gresham, even Sandy, to feel safer while I work.

...there's nothing happening here which requires the National Guard. But local leaders need to step up. It's been worse since 2008.

I'm a Portland native, working as a rideshare food delivery driver. Downtown constantly. About half my hours are after sunset. Portland presents as broadly safe-ish, especially in trendy/affluent areas by day, but a LOT of shit goes down at night. I've been a victim of a lot of harassment and crime.

There have been boarded-up windows in downtown Portland consistently for 5 years. Hard drug use is widespread. Crime is higher than it should be. Portland is not a war zone and Trump is ridiculous, but it's also not nearly as safe a city as we deserve. Trump says black, you say white, but it's grey.
