I put together a ranking of every movie I saw that screened in Venice, Telluride or Toronto. And I wrote a little bit about going to fall festivals during a time of great uncertainty about the future of film criticism.
Venice/Telluride/Toronto 2025: The Wrap-Up and the Rankings
When I was younger, I assumed I would never go to a film festival. That was something other critics did — it felt too far away for me to eve...

Fair to each side of its afterlife love triangle, Eternity still skirts its sharpest and most interesting questions about love. Our review: www.avclub.com/eternity-rev...
A slight comedy takes its love triangle into the afterlife's Eternity
In the surface-level romantic comedy Eternity, Elizabeth Olsen must choose between Miles Teller and Callum Turner in the afterlife.

MY UNDESIRABLE FRIENDS: PART I opens this weekend in Los Angeles, Seattle, Oklahoma City and Cleveland. For the @latimes.com, I made the case for one of the year's singular films.

I reviewed ZOOTOPIA 2, which is a lot clunkier than the original. But the bond between that bunny and that fox remains charming.

If we're ranking KNIVES OUT films, WAKE UP DEAD MAN is No. 2 on my list -- but, also, the franchise's darkest and most emotional installment.

Great review. One of many fine O'Connor performances this year; this one almost seems to be in conversation with The Mastermind--these guys just can't get it together, but one eventually finds a way--and also a film that serves as a reminder of Amy Madigan's range, especially coming after Weapons.

For the @latimes.com, I reviewed REBUILDING, a film about trying to hold onto something after you’ve lost everything.
Review: Josh O'Connor, ever fascinating, continues to roam a lonesome range in 'Rebuilding'
A story singed by disaster in a way that might be triggering for Angelenos, Max Walker-Silverman’s drama handles the aftermath of a wildfire with sensitivity.

A fine review. Tim is one of the rare critics who is intelligent without being dismissive of a film's emotional heft. So many critics show how smart they are by having a closed hearted approach to a work and it really bothers me more and more.

The indie distributor based in New York began creating DVD box sets during the company's early days. The annual disc sets have become highly anticipated in the years since.

For the @latimes.com, I hung out with Odessa A’zion, who curses up a storm and is a big hugger. In other words, she's my kind of person.
A self-tape audition landed Odessa A'zion 'Marty Supreme.' She's still pinching herself
With standout roles in both the highly anticipated 'Marty Supreme' and HBO's buzzy new comedy 'I Love L.A.,' Odessa A'zion is enjoying the moment. That doesn't mean she expects it to last.

This issue was foundational for me as a young person. I started getting a subscription to Rolling Stone because of it. (I still have one.) And it introduced me to so many artists who became so important to me. Over the years, I have thanked writers who worked on the issue for changing my life.
Spotted this tiny book (collecting a significant RS listicle for me) on one of my shelves yesterday. At TIFF this year I had lunch with @kphipps3000.bsky.social and @timgrierson.bsky.social and Tim wowed me and Keith by reeling off the Top 20 from this list, mostly in order, from memory.
