I put together a ranking of every movie I saw that screened in Venice, Telluride or Toronto. And I wrote a little bit about going to fall festivals during a time of great uncertainty about the future of film criticism.
Venice/Telluride/Toronto 2025: The Wrap-Up and the Rankings
When I was younger, I assumed I would never go to a film festival. That was something other critics did — it felt too far away for me to eve...

Jason Blum's take on AI sucks. an AI takeover isn't inevitable, and treating it as such (while also referring to filmmaking as "content creation," smdh) helps AI companies promote the lie that their deeply unprofitable, destructive tech is more powerful and useful than it actually is.

Kacey Musgraves’s Golden Hour is amazing, but it is ALSO a stealth “We’re breaking up” album AND “the warning signs were always there” album.

It's a given in the music industry that "I've fallen in love!" albums are usually regrettable, and "I've gotten a divorce!" ones often have some of the artist's best work. So question for the group, what are the best "I've fallen in love!" albums?

Especially in retrospect, "Happy & Sad" really feels like the definitive statement on that album.

That care and rigor came through in the piece. Even more interested in how I'll respond to the film in my second viewing.

Your last sentence is one that's been on my mind a lot, too. And thank you for all of this -- it means so much.

A beautiful review, Richard.

The best film I saw at Sundance comes to theaters this Friday. It's the documentary THE PERFECT NEIGHBOR, which tells the story of Ajike Owens' 2023 murder almost exclusively through police bodycam footage. The movie condenses everything wrong with America in 97 gripping minutes.

It does, indeed. This is a good reminder that I need to start listening to the score.

This means a lot -- thank you. (And I am very sorry for your losses.) I mangled the excerpt badly, but here it is. (Only by finding this did I realize it's from FIND ME, André Aciman's follow-up to CALL ME BY YOUR NAME.)

THE ALABAMA SOLUTION was the final film I saw at Sundance this year. Directed by Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman, the documentary incorporates smuggled footage shot by incarcerated men in an Alabama prison wanting to tell the world about the mistreatment they were facing. The film is out today.

A year ago, I saw a documentary that has stayed with me: SMILES AND KISSES YOU, about a lonely man who buys a sex doll and adds an AI component to it so he can have a "real" girlfriend. It's a sad but nonjudgmental look at modern loneliness. The film is now available on Apple, Amazon and Kanopy.
