New "49ers +/-" with @mattbarrows.bsky.social -- getting to 8-4 with some questions about Brock Purdy but no doubt about Christian McCaffrey's value. And a weather game in Cleveland up ahead before the bye.

Trial wrapped yesterday afternoon. That was interesting. Everybody on the jury was very thoughtful.
It’s official — no Levi’s Stadium for me tonight
Unlikely that I'll be able to get to the game tonight due to jury duty. But I'll be watching on TV.

One of the reasons I made sure to get to Santa Clara on Saturday for the Shanahan presser is because I knew I was missing this game tonight.

Why didn't the Rams have their 4th in 2023? In Aug 2021, they traded it to NE for ... RB Sony Michel.

* Future-pick trades aren't just throw-aways. They matter. You never know when they might REALLY matter.
I didn't put this in the column, but was thinking it:

Imagine if the Rams had beaten out the 49ers for McCaffrey in 2022.

It was close. I heard it basically came down to the Rams not having a 2023 4th-round pick to trade to CAR & the 49ers adding their 4 as the last piece.
Imagine if the 49ers had never traded for Christian McCaffrey. That's basically what 2024 was all about. But this is 2025. And he's everything for this team.

Christian McCaffrey is holding the 49ers together
The 49ers’ running back is their identity, their engine, their bell cow, and the reason they’ve survived all the devastating losses this season.

Wait Pat Spencer and Will Richard are both +18 at halftime in a game the Warriors lead by 11... and Podziemski is -10?
November 25, 2025 at 4:08 AM
Well that wasn't nice.

That was like when I thought I was hitting 6-iron on a par-3 yesterday and accidentally hit the 9. True story

The Ji'Ayir Brown game

The Playoff Committee will not judge the 49ers well vs. the Eye Test on this game.

Just an awful whiff by Pinnock

Guessing Shanahan's plan was to run and throw to CMC early, get Carolina's defense to overcommit to him, then play-action and go over the top.

I believe 2 INTs were on play-action when Purdy just missed the throw. At halftime Shanahan said he was throwing it to the right guys.
November 25, 2025 at 3:12 AM
7 of the last 8 plays of that drive, obviously including the CMC TD, were running plays
Last 4 plays have been runs
49ers have run the ball 16 times and thrown it 26 times so far.

Figured there'd be more running. Maybe coming up here.

McMillan so far (after all that Shanahan praise a few days ago):

1 catch for 6 yards on 3 targets
November 25, 2025 at 2:52 AM
Yards at half:
49ers 180
Panthers 72

First downs at half:
49ers 13
Panthers 3

INTs at half:
49ers 3
Panthers 1

Shanahan doesn't seem too concerned about Purdy, which isn't surprising. But the ball just isn't being put in the right places.
November 25, 2025 at 2:31 AM
Shanahan telling Buck and Aikman in their meeting that Purdy never gives up on a play, which is very good and also sometimes not very good... is very timely info right now.
November 25, 2025 at 2:21 AM
One of these times Shanahan should just run a play instead of faking it as the clock winds to the 2-minute warning. Nobody would ever expect it, since they've done it the fake way about 400 times in a row.

Brock Purdy owes the 49ers' defense, big time. The Panthers are finally on the board, as the 49ers hold a 7-3 lead with 2:28 left in the first half. Purdy is the first QB in the NFL this season to throw three INTs in the first half of a game.
November 25, 2025 at 2:11 AM
What is Purdy doing? That might've been a weird route... but ... whoa.
November 25, 2025 at 2:05 AM
Purdy is throwing jump balls that he should not be throwing.
November 25, 2025 at 1:56 AM
Joe Buck uses the first down stat! I thought I was the only one who tracks that. Or one of the few.
November 25, 2025 at 1:45 AM
And Ji'Ayir Brown bails him out.
Exactly what Purdy can NOT do in this game.

Horn made an incredible play, but the 49ers don't need to test him like that.
