This is denial. It is that bad. It's hard to acknowledge it's that bad because it means there is a responsibility to do something. Nobody really seems to be doing anything making it hard to accept the reality that is unfolding in front of us.
It's easier to just pretend it's not that bad. It's not only not that bad, it's worse.
Canadians aren't avoiding American goods because they think the threats against them are idle. European leaders aren't meeting publicly with zelensky because our abandonment of Ukraine and seeming fealty to Russia is a show. The UN vote in favor of Russia, against Ukraine, should terrify everyone.
In regards to DARPA, privatization is the goal. You can watch the republican people in positions of power give speeches. Not only are several sieg heiling, but one stated on video the explicit goal of the current administration is to make it so government workers don't want to go to work. Their intentions are out in the open.
The economy, government, and society don’t collapse the moment they're poisoned. Even after the poisoning happens life seems to go on as normal. The damage of poison spreads quietly before it builds up enough to have an effect that will assert itself in reality. By the time symptoms manifests past the point of denial, all the lawyers, cops, generals, JAGs, intelligence officials, US marshall's etc, will all have been replaced by loyalists. It will be a literal fait acompli.

Adobe has officially jumped the shark. Their AI remove feature in lightroom just added a bitcoin to my gull bird in flight photo. A bitcoin!?!

Turn off AI features by default (to reduce their climate impact)
If users don't use a future that requires a lot of energy and water, that's wasteful. Making such features opt-in is the right thing to do.
