All right! My first full week as a full-time writer who deliberately moves their human body every day is concluded

Since Monday I:

wrote 14,500 words on my horror novella

walked 46,000 steps

This isn't bad considering I was still laid low with a cold on Monday and wrote little and exercised less

A little good news today. For the first time since December 2000, the entire state of California is no longer either entering or recovering from a drought! That's 25 years of drought conditions. www.drought.gov/states/calif...

It's me! I'm interstellar art heists!
There are a ton of great-looking books coming in 2026, and I've rounded up the ones that I'm looking forward to the most, including space operas, interstellar art heists, unicorns, dinosaurs, and plenty more.

3,250 words today. I have entered novelette length on my way to novella length. I think I have a good handle on the pacing, and I wrote some banger lines today

Doing art can feel pointless in times like these but it's the main thing I know how to do

Writing a horror story as a distraction from living in a much bigger and scarier horror documentary

Unforseen benefit of starting day working on fiction is that no matter what happens over course of the day otherwise, I have done the enjoyable thing I can control. Which is deeply comforting at day end. There's something very calming about creating narrative. Brains love order.

typos this morning include "relunctantly" and "line-of-sigh," both of which are pretty good

anyway, 3500 words written this morning, AND I'm like 90% of the way over my cold, so, reasons to be cheerful

The Shield

Honorable mention to Angel (that’s also the answer to the prompt I saw earlier that was like “what’s your favorite show made by a total asshole” or whatever)
Given that apparently the Stranger Things finale was meh (idk, didn't watch it, just the scuttlebutt) and we're not that far removed from the disastrous GOT finale that retroactively made everyone have never cared about the show:

What's the *best* ending to a show you've ever seen? Quote/reply etc

Spent the first few days of the New Year in Monterey and environs and it was lovely

Walked 3.5 sloooooow miles but the sun was out and I saw good street art and continued to seed little free libraries with my excess author copies (there are so many around here, seriously, almost every dot on this map is a little free library)

Okay, got 3300 words written on my horror novella. Still not exactly zooming along at full power here but it's solid progress (and a horrible thing has now happened to a likable character, which is crucial)

I'm going to take a walk and breathe some air that isn't just my own recirculated coughs
January 6, 2026 at 8:37 PM
My cold symptoms are getting better but my lower back is sore (happens whenever I stay in bed too much), bleahhhh

Have done some cat-cow stretches though and will take a walk after I write, should help

I understand on an intellectual level that I cannot expect to be as productive when I’m sick as I am when I am not sick, but what if I’m secretly just a lazy malingerer

I am still sick (sore throat is better, stuffy head is worse) but I am breaking ground on a new horror novella (probably, maybe a long novelette) anyway!

I also got an unexpected email about a cool writing thing. The first cool writing thing of 2026!
January 5, 2026 at 7:34 PM
I am actually enjoying these last few episodes of Stranger Things but I did just say aloud “what if the try-fail cycle but TOO MUCH?”

just typoed "sore throat" as "sword throat" and you know what I stand by it
