If you think Trump turning the military on red states means he's going after his own supporters, you are goddamn stupid. Every state is purple; red states just have fewer urban ppl than blue. He's threatening *liberal* cities - mainly minorities. Ppl who already face oppression from their state
I’m already seeing people who position themselves as progressive or liberal “joking” that Trump should occupy these cities instead. Y’all are so disappointing.
The thing is, I’m pretty sure these all majority black cities and I’m worried that Trump will eventually try to occupy them too at some point. The fact that they are in Republican-controlled states isn’t a gotcha so much as evidence of how they’ve been maligned by their state governments.

ICYMI yesterday + how you can help guarantee reader access to @mississippifreepress.org 🫤
Mississippi's new social media age-verification law has now forced BlueSky to block Mississippi IP addresses.

Our Mississippi Free Press team is now urgently having to grapple with what that means for our audience—and for press freedom.

My new editorial:
Ed Note | State Law Compels BlueSky to Block Mississippi IPs
Ashton Pittman writes about how Mississippi’s social media age-verification law prompted BlueSky to block access to Mississippi IP addresses.

Companies who have real customer service, even if it takes a minute, to the front please!!!

BECAUSE WHY AM I PAYING YOU IF I HAVE TO WASTE MY TIME TRAINING YOUR AI????
So many companies are outsourcing their 'help' features to AI. Multiple times the AI has sent on a wild goose chase for a feature that does not exist.

I'd rather have to wait on an email from a person than waste my time searching for something that doesn't exist.
Polar bear was by faaaaaar the favorite of my students so they'll all be geeked to see this lol
#2025MMM CHAMPION: POLAR BEAR

Thank you so much for following along, and we can't wait to see you next year for #2026MMM!

Remember: if you're learning, you're winning!
I have less than 100 pages left in Oathbound.

I’m at once anxious to finish it and deeply sad that I’ll never be able to read it for the first time again.
On teaching and tomorrows. Because I promised myself I would write and share more this year: open.substack.com/pub/tisdrj/p...

Sprinkling Black scientists in the same rigid and unimaginative curriculum and pedagogy won’t make biology more inclusive or welcoming.

Thinking outside of the box is required. Which means we can’t be preoccupied worrying if someone is judging us for doing things differently
I don’t EVER want to hear ppl saying science and science education aren’t political ever again.

That mess is how you end up with the US’s new Secretary of HHS

Somebody says you have no language and you spend twenty years proving that you do…. None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing”.
- Toni Morrison

These words are so important to remember especially right now
Stop trying to convince people who don’t matter of your worthiness and invest that energy into our communities instead.

“The very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being.
learning that someone is exactly the person they present themselves as is such a top tier moment!

Yes!

I’m committed to letting the educators who inspire me know it!
You know what would be a good New Year's Resolution?

Telling more people when you appreciate and love their stuff.

Tell artists, tell writers, tell everyone.

Everyone loves a compliment, spend less time focusing on the negatives and put some love out there instead.

Happy New Year, people!

There is no ethical use of AI, especially not for marginalized students in historically marginalized communities whose neighborhoods will undoubtedly be negatively impacted.
AI data centers are multiplying across the U.S. and sucking up huge amounts of power.

New evidence shows they may also be distorting the normal flow of electricity for millions of Americans
AI Needs So Much Power, It’s Making Yours Worse
There’s a strong link between proximity to AI data centers and higher levels of distorted power in residential areas

I’m so exhausted by decision-makers in education refusing to invest in long-term solutions. If you don’t have the resources to do it right, you don’t have the resources to do it at all.
There are a lot of graphs that are misleading unintentionally, are difficult to read, or use incomplete data on purpose to try and prove a point unsupported by the data. Those are bad graphs.
