Who speaks for Planet Earth? Only those whose wonder and curiosity, married to their scientific skepticism, can understand that we are the only salvation from ourselves.

Scientist. Educator. Skeptic. Humanist.

Here’s the TL;DR:
🎓 BS Aeronautics (think: pilot + intermediate engineer)
120 credits English, didn’t get the degree (long story)
📈 Entertainment Technical Director, 16 years (more science-y than it sounds)

Amateur student of meteorology, seismology, climatology
Let me just make it absolutely, unequivocally known:

I do not support those who use AI. I consider AI to be the greatest single technological threat to civilization since the atom bomb. Its power to destroy, its power to deceive, its power in general will never be used to benefit mankind.

I love that, despite the scope and scale of my employer, I still have to post things like this just to have folks behave in an adult, reasonable way.

Yet, I could signpost my face and neurotypicals would STILL force me into uncomfortable interactions and then put ME down for not being social. #ASD

@sensorystories.bsky.social @adhdruids.bsky.social Would love for you two to dive into this conversation and bring your incredible insights along. This is a space perfect for you (imho, feel free to ignore though. Only you can pick your choice of social interactions. :) )
I’m sure someone is writing it and I very much look forward to reading the big book that explains the science of autism, the politicization of autism, the social mediatization of autism, and the many interesting and sometimes internally inconsistent beliefs and practices of “doing” autism.

Ouch. Another critical hit from a satirical comedy page that sometimes hits a little too close to reality.
Sarah Harrow, 38, who thinks through her every action with the strategic neuroticism of a moral philosopher, is unfortunately not in control of how other people react to her.

the james dobson memorial website has a page where you can submit a "tribute" and they don't even ask for your e-mail address. which seems risky. i mean. you could just write anything there. even gay microfiction. or relevant bible verses. or gay bible microfiction. jamesdobsonmemorial.com/tributes

Never.
Let.
Science.
Die.

Fight it. Fight it from the seats of authority to the desks of our youngest students. For the sake of our planet and the sake of our species we must persevere.

Do your part, never let science die.

Excellent thread by Prof. Ortiz demonstrating the feasibility and practicality of switching to all-electric home lifestyles.

Your mileage may vary depending on your utility providers, but threads like this prove that it IS possible; that places the burden on us as citizens to take similar actions.
July Electrification update: My home now has 2 heat pumps, so it's confusing to call this a heat pump update, hence the new header. As a climate scientist, I want to show we can reduce emissions & so I've been electrifying my home in NE Ohio. Here's my monthly update as a long 🧵. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🌊🔋

I’ve undergone a tremendous personality and perspective change over the last decade or so.

It’s been a journey with its start in racism, homophobia, cowardice, conservative ignorance, and cynicism.

I’m certain 20-year old me would have sneered with disdain at who I’ve become over time.

The Māori word for #autism
is takiwatanga, ‘in their own time
and space’ I for one think it’s lovely
to describe the condition I can relate
to this as I find focusing on one thing
at a time works better for me.

It is so incredibly heartbreaking to have been in pursuit of a life in STEM- to have studied and worked hard to get closer and closer but have my career (that I was forced into by necessity) pull me further away.

Neurodivergent facts:
1) I am bullied/harassed daily at work.
2) My management does not support me as a “disabled” worker, despite what the books and manuals instruct.
3) I can’t afford to leave and be jobless.
4) The bullies and harassers are aware of #3, so the harassment intensifies daily.
*sigh*

My corporate employer cannot seem to grasp the difference between the power and versatility of Microsoft Office Desktop and the horridly weak and watered-down Office 365.

The difference is analogous to the difference between children’s doctor playset toys and actual medical instruments.

In light of recent #scotus rulings:

I keep seeing statements like “this can’t go on” or “how does this keep getting worse?”

This is the very definition of “the slippery slope.” Once pushed down it, extreme effort will be required to slow, stop, and climb back up to where we started our slide.

Situations like the destruction of the latest #spacex rocket on its launch pad really hurt public perception of science 🧪. Regardless of SpaceX’s intent or the dedication of its engineers, their track record is beginning to cause more harm than good.

Why does this matter?

Finished. What a book!

I have rewritten my adult goals for life.

1) I no longer have any of my previous desires. I have reset my mind to its childlike state.
2) I will explore, discover, inquire, and aspire to greater understanding of our Universe. 🧪
3) I will encourage others to do the same.

Story of my life.

Biggest lie I was ever told growing up was “work hard and you’ll be rewarded.” Nope. In the end, I discovered that working hard and being kind just got me relegated to the bottom rungs for not being insufferable enough.

But at least my kindness and humanity is still intact…
“I just pretended to be the type of shallow, empty person I’d completely avoid. Sort of an amalgamation of Becky Armitage from high school and a horrible contestant from The Apprentice, mixed with the mannerisms of Holly Willoughby. I was fucking insufferable. And guess what? They loved me.”

ND thoughts #002:

Always hire NDs. They’re loyal to a fault, naturally enabling despite social anxiety, strongly altruistic, and hard working. They avoid politics and almost always give honest feedback.

They’re also easily abusable and no one- not themselves or their coworkers- will defend them!

Who speaks for Planet Earth? Only those willing to be skeptical, wonderstruck, and curious- and those willing to brave the floods of ignorance, trivialization, and belittlement that wash forth from the superstitious and cowardly.

The #autistic conundrum Part 001:

Watching a new supervisor being given a coworker-led tour of your workplace get introduced to *every other employee* except you… despite the fact you are a critical part of the operation and have an easily accessible desk space that isn’t hidden.

This.

15 years of promotions skipped because “can’t you just turn off your autism and be more charming?”

No, I can’t. Although, a proper rephrase would be “I can’t flick a switch and be nauseatingly dishonest and ingratiating towards human beings who deserve honest communication.”
