So... hey everyone. I'm Tom.

I study neuronal oscillations and their role in attention and decision-making, mainly using MEG and brain stimulation in human volunteers.

I'm a relatively new assistant prof at @thechbh.bsky.social, Birmingham, UK.

Birmingham is a lovely place. Come visit 🙂
Such a good point! 👍

Neat! Folks arguing for a move from verbal theories into more formal theories in the context of environmental psychology.

Seems like something @irisvanrooij.bsky.social and friends would support... see neat tutorial paper here psycnet.apa.org/record/2020-...

These are great people. Go work with them.
There are 3 Oxford-based post doc positions for this Wellcome Trust project that will be advertised soon!

If you have experinece in neurostimulation (tms/tus) and/or modelling of cogneuro data in humans do contact one of us (me, @mkflugge.bsky.social @lilweb.bsky.social, Jacinta OShea) to discuss!
Repetitive negative thoughts will be investigated using a range of cutting-edge brain science techniques as part of a new study led by the Department of Psychiatry, University of Oxford and funded by Wellcome @wellcometrust.bsky.social 👇

Hey, @thechbh.bsky.social: Isn't official 'Rising Star of Neuroscience' @nadinedijkstra.bsky.social scheduled to give a talk at our institute next month?

What's that?

She IS? 😮😮😮😮

We still have some places available for our thalamus workshop in January, including slots for attendee short talks (just submit a thalamus-related abstract).

An international collaboration fails to replicate one FUS (/TUS) protocol previously thought to change motor cortex excitability.

We're firmly in the phase of 'okay, so what *really* works?' with FUS. Great to see these kinds of efforts to find robust effects 👍

A Double-Blind Replication Attempt of Offline 5Hz-rTUS-Induced Corticospinal Excitability
Abstract. Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) is a promising new form of non-invasive neuromodulation. As a nascent technique, replication of its effects on brain function is important. Of parti...

Got a collaborative grant to review/sign off hours before the deadline once.

Discovered a reference to 'innovations in sustainable agriculture' which had been missed in every previous edit.

It was a neuroscience grant.

Always love seeing people make a big noise about their open M/EEG datasets.

Go have fun with this one 👍

They're also robust to name changes.

Like you can just log in and update your name, and there is an 'also known as' box for people who need to retain connections to previous names / have multiple names.

10/10 no notes.

The brain represents the world around us as a series of neural states - stable patterns of activity that change as we move from one event to the next.

New paper by @selmalugtmeijer.bsky.social showing that neural states get longer as people age. #PsychSciSky

Temporal dedifferentiation of neural states with age during naturalistic viewing - Communications Biology
Movie fMRI data reveals age-related lengthening of neural states in visual and prefrontal regions, reflecting reduced temporal differentiation while preserved alignment with perceived events suggests stable coarse event segmentation.

That's my intuition too. I think if I was a reviewer I would suggest inverting a blue/pos red/neg colormap.
October 30, 2025 at 9:19 AM
Personally, for diverging maps I like dark-mode ones like Berlin from @fabiocrameri.ch (again, because I'm used to blue = negative, red = positive from jet).

And for sequential I like viridis and inferno because I'm pretty basic 🙂
