The brain represents the world around us as a series of neural states - stable patterns of activity that change as we move from one event to the next.

New paper by @selmalugtmeijer.bsky.social showing that neural states get longer as people age. #PsychSciSky

Temporal dedifferentiation of neural states with age during naturalistic viewing - Communications Biology
Movie fMRI data reveals age-related lengthening of neural states in visual and prefrontal regions, reflecting reduced temporal differentiation while preserved alignment with perceived events suggests stable coarse event segmentation.

If you'll be at the Symposium for Individual Differences in Cognition, check out @hannahgthomas.bsky.social's poster (#11) on the relationship between sustained attention and inhibitory control. Wish I could be there! #FOMO🗻🔬🎉🍻

Involved in grad admissions? This is worth a read 👇🏻
I'm back! In this experiment we had 39 participants choose between 8 different PhD programs which varied in terms of region, application materials, prestige, and fees. Importantly, two of the programs had a GRE requirement and two were equivalent but did not:

Guys, I just wrote a review proposal while on a run that I was unable to write all of yesterday, sat at my desk.

New #lifehack? 🤯 (Yes, I probably have #ADHD 🤣)

I encourage every PhD student to set up an academic website, even if they don't feel like they have a lot to put on it. Why? Helps to get discovered by search engines and establish a search-friendly presence.

What platforms work well for simple websites and are cheap (or better yet, free)? 👀

Maths...

If you make $100,000 a year (not bad), it will take you 10 MILLION years to earn a trillion dollars.

If you make a million dollars a year (wow!), it'll still take you a million years to earn a trillion dollars.

Tax the rich.

It’s insulting to tell 🇨🇦 scientists we need international scientists to run to our rescue & ensure innovation.

🇨🇦 scientists have exceeded expectations with paltry funding. If the gov funded Tricouncil > & sustainably; imagine how innovative we’d already be!! /End

But, as @pinglamjoeip.bsky.social and I have written about extensively at this point, it is a complete myth that federal research funding is being unfairly allocated to "woke" or "leftist" research.
Alberta’s Bill 18: Who gets the most federal research funding? Danielle Smith might be surprised by what the data shows
The ideological war waged by Smith will only endanger high-quality research void of political interference from the government.

🧵The Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research has put forward a motion to release ALL data in relation to federal research funding applications.

This motion was put forward by conservative MPs who are skeptical of funding being allocated "fairly."

New preprint! What happens in the brain when people offload memories into external reminders? Using fMRI decoding, we found that the corresponding neural trace fades until it becomes statistically absent.
