Autocorrect simply doesn’t do this. Similar quantitative beginning and end (take initial state of text, provide next token) but so much different is happening between that the qualitative output is different

The weights, as pure math, are extremely abstract. Some process language and image *using the same weights*. And translation can be learned very quickly once one language has been learned

They’re big enough to develop relational clusters in the weights and a quasi-logical process using those clusters, and uncover enough latent properties in language that they can generalize well beyond their training data

I think in terms of foundational “how they work” LLMs might be able to be called fancy autocorrect, but I think that elides the emergent properties LLMs have that make them special
