New paper in Isogloss! We look at the role of ambient exposure to code-switching in the processing of contextually unattested, but syntactically licit, switches in L2 learners of Spanish. Implications for experience-based processing are discussed.

Thank you to the editors for their hard work coordinating this special issue!

The experiment in this paper is part of a larger study investigating how (passive) exposure to community-level code-switching distributional production patterns modulates bilingual processing. Stay tuned! 👀

After #SMLP2025 I took a train to Prague to attend #AMLaP2025. So glad that this AMLaP was my first! Had a great time (re)connecting with everyone and learning about some really cool work being done by colleagues in Europe. Hope to come back to this conference!
A photo of the Jan Hus monument with the Prague Astronomical clock in the background rising up against a blue sky. The photo is framed at the bottom by flowers and greenery. A photo taken on the Charles Bridge of the Vltava river. Ornamental buildings are in the distance, including the Old Town Bridge Tower and the Charles Bridge Museum. The photo is taken on a sunny day with a blue sky. A photo of red flowers in the foreground and the Rudolfinum, a neo-renaissance style building and concert hall, in the background. Green grass and a blue sky frame the photo. A photo of St. Vitus Cathedral taken from across the Vltava. The cathedral is framed tree branches. A bridge and red-roof buildings are also featured.

Now that I’m back in GNV, I get to share all of the excitement of the last few weeks. I had the pleasure of attending this year’s Summer School on Statistical Methods for Linguistics and Psychology hosted by the University of Potsdam. Amazing theoretical discussions and lots of new friends.
A sign with the text “Universität Potsdam Babelsberg” in front of tall trees with green leaves and a red brick building. A view overlooking the Griebnitzsee lake, with trees starting to change color and a blue sky. Another view of the lake at eye level framed by hanging greenery. Two swans gliding across the blue water of the Griebnitzsee. Flowers and other greenery frame the bottom of the image, while trees and a cloudy sky line the top of the image.

Leaving #SNL2025 with new energy for research and collaboration. Thank you to Gallaudet University for hosting! We presented ongoing work on (1) the neural mechanisms of Theory of Mind in distinct language profiles and (2) language learning as an intervention for cognitive decline in healthy aging.

Snapshots of some standout moments from the past six weeks teaching with UF in Costa Rica: Cultivating Community through Service Learning. Coming away from San José with new lifelong friendships and students who’ve discovered a profound appreciation for intercultural dialogue and relationships.
A view of the Central Valley of Costa Rica lit by city lights from a mountaintop in Escazú at night. The view is partially framed by an illuminated heart. A closeup shot of a two-toed sloth hanging upside down, looking at the camera. A shot of the ruins of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción de Ujarrás in Paraíso. The walkway up to the white ruins is lined with purple and blue flowers. A daybreak shot of the mountains and foliage of Monteverde, Costa Rica, the sky still pink and orange with morning light, and a few clouds littering the landscape.

My spring break, as told by photos of local coffee dates and someone who was very glad I got to spend so much time with him this week.
An overhead shot of some leaf latte art. A white and tan dog bringing a toy to the photographer, ready to play. A shot of two cups of coffee, implying another person has joined the photographer. A white and tan dog under a blanket on a plush bed in front of a bookshelf.

I’ll make this my inaugural post on my SciComm BlueSky — hi, I’m Grace, I’m a graduating PhD candidate from UF researching L2 sentence processing and bilingualism.

I migrated from IG and was GraceTalksLanguage on there, communicating SLA/language and Brain/bilingualism to non-expert audiences.

I follow all of the usual linguistics Tik Tok/reels/shorts and – no shade, they're excellent – but it's so dominated by things like historical linguistics/etymology/fun language facts. Gen Z needs islands, N400, and subsective adjectives on their fyp

The first moments of spring break have been spent joyously reading novels late into the night and catching up with friends under a post-storm blue sky. Let’s see whether tomorrow bodes better for the to-do list!
A university courtyard with trees, their leaves green with spring, and pink flowers littering the ground. A red brick building is seen in the background with some lampposts. The trees and building rise up against a bright blue sky with no clouds in sight.

Yesterday I successfully defended my dissertation.

When I was 17, I learned Danish and from that point I wanted nothing more than to understand how the brain processes our second language.

What started as just one question became something so much larger. Ten years later, Dr. Grace deMeurisse!

Another day, another presentation! It was wonderful to join the UF Department of Neuroscience for their research fair this afternoon to share about ongoing work funded by the UF Center for Cognitive Aging and Memory. Thankful for an environment that fosters cross-disciplinary collaborations.

We were glad to welcome students taking Psycholinguistics of Bilingualism to the lab today for eye-tracking and EEG demos! It’s always fun to show the “behind the scenes” of our work. Thanks to RAs from the Bilingual Sentence Processing Lab and the Brain, Language, & Bilingualism Lab for their help!
