A wilder Highlands is possible but only if we rebuild what’s been lost. 🌳 For centuries, key species have been pushed out of Scotland’s #landscapes. We're bringing them back, so nature can function as it once did.

Late winter is mating season for the Scottish #wildcat, also nicknamed the Highland Tiger 🐈

Thanks to the work of @saveourwildcats.bsky.social, wildcats are being released in the Cairngorms National Park to restore populations and help prevent the extinction of this iconic Scottish species.
Scottish wildcat information | Trees for Life
Rarely seen and famously untameable, the wildcat is an important predator of the Caledonian Forest, but is threatened by interbreeding with feral and hybrid domestic cats.

Help restore Scotland’s forests 🌳 The Caledonian forest is made up of many different native trees, each playing an important role in supporting #wildlife, people, and the #climate.

#Ptarmigan live in the mountainous areas of the #ScottishHighlands, perfectly adapted to cold winters. Their feathers change from grey and brown in summer to snow-white in #winter. 🏔❄️

Its name comes from the Scottish Gaelic ‘tarmachan’, meaning ‘croaker’, because of the bird’s distinctive call.
