How can we create writing spaces and places where students can express themselves and make something beautiful?

This is the essential question that #TDSB Beginning Teachers and their Mentors have begun to explore in a professional learning series led by the incredible @triciaebarvia.bsky.social
It was amazing seeing you in person!!!!
PS - in case you are new to me or @sonjacherrypaul.bsky.social , here's a little more about us (and of course, more info at TheIREL.org) #IREL25
Join us! Register today at TheIREL.org and then mark the dates in your calendar! And then SHARE widely!

Bring a team to IREL this summer and debrief together on Day 2. (Please note that space may be limited for Day 2 depending on number of registrants.) #IREL25
In thinking about a path forward for IREL, we reflected both on this collective moment and the decisions each of us as individuals faces navigating the world right now.

Grief and rage. Hope and determination. Resilience and resistance. Clarity and commitment.

In community, freedom. #IREL25
Day 2 is the Call-to-Action Workshop.

Consider this an IREL intensive, where we reflect, discuss, share, and plan a path forward. This will be a practical, hands-on workshop led by members of our IREL team.

THU, July 10: 9 AM to 11:15 AM ET

Dispatch From The Ruins: (School The Eleventh Incitement) from Ross Gay’s Inciting Joy is all about making “beautiful shit together” in spite of and under oppressive educational systems. The entire essay is utterly delightful and inspiring.
ISO of quotes, essays, articles that speak to the importance of making art / creating / imagination during dark times. Let me know what you have and I'll share as well.

(also, still getting my footing around here and not sure with # s to use? #edusky #DisruptTexts #ELA ?)
I also wonder/am frustrated by how many might see Wicked (and love it) and not see the ways that fascism and racism and sexism are operating in both the film and well… everywhere.
I didn’t love Wizard of Oz, more that it was just one of those movies I was supposed to love. When I think back to the scenes that stood out to me most in that movie, it was when the Wicked witch was melting and then when Dorothy was reunited with her grandparents.
I do think that it could be part of a text set on Whiteness (and White feminism specifically) that would include Succession, the Barbie movie, and Gatsby. If I was teaching a college class, we’d look at the characters of Glinda, Siobhan, Barbie, and Daisy.
Okay, I have never seen Wicked the musical nor read Wicked the book. I grew up with Wizard of Oz though. But other than that, I walked into seeing Wicked the movie today mostly not knowing much (well, except for ‘Defying Gravity’).

I have feeling/thoughts and trying to sort through them.
If you’re at #PoCC, come through!!!
Looking forward to being in community with NAIS #PoCC participants at our session, “Liberation as Stance: Literacy Tool kits for Humanity.”
While our books *sold out* at the NAIS bookstore @triciaebarvia.bsky.social and I are each giving a copy away at our session. Join us!

December is really confusing for non-Christian kids in public schools. Holiday shows and decorations and constant Christmas music playing. I don't know if teachers really consider all of this from their perspective.

#Getfree by @triciaebarvia.bsky.social is today’s #bookaday. What a thoughtful and well-written exploration of antibias literacy instruction. I’ll come back to this one again and again.
Oh my gosh, thank you so much for reading and sharing! 🥰 I hope it is helpful! Please reach out if I can answer any questions!

I stand by this, even given the stellar history of Black protest.

Black folks are always going to stand up for civil rights and human rights! But NO, you are NOT going to see the vast majority of us outside if there's a military coup... are you serious?!

We vote the way we do SO WE DON'T HAVE TO.
No, we aren't going to be like the brave folks over in South Korea. Do you know how many individuals and institutions are scrambling to obey in advance right now?!

Preparing a defensive strategy is one thing. Capitulating all of your ground more than a month before the right takes over? Sigh.
Exactly! Observed too many people saying things like “it’s all the same and what’s the big deal” and making false equivalences to generative AI. It’s really concerning.
