Jack Shepherd was born on 29 October 1940 and passed away on 24 November 2025 at the age of 85. He was an actor, playwright and theatre director. Jack was known for his television roles, most notably the title role in Trevor Griffiths' series about a young Labour MP, Bill Brand, and the detective drama Wycliffe. Shepherd's other television credits include Drama Trails, Super Sleuths, Murder Most Foul, Heroes of Comedy, Omnibus, Star Games, Full House, Encounters, BBC2 Playhouse, The Other Side, Second City Firsts, High Stakes, Manhunt, Fearless, Rebellion, Midsomer Murders, New Tricks, The Politician's Husband, Moving On, Waking the Dead, The Nativity, Thorne: Sleepyhead, The Fixer, The Slavery Business, All About George, High Stakes, City Central, The Murder Room, Peter Ackroyd's London, Silent Witness, Man and Boy, The Jury, Over Here, Calling the Shots, Lovejoy, Between the Lines, Madness, Blind Justice, Bulman, Sons and Lovers, Jackanory, Scorpion Tales and Crown Court. Sir Richard Branson and his wife Joan have been together for over 50 years. In 1989, they got married. It was announced on 25 November 2025 that Joan had passed away at the age of 80. The first series of The Charlie Drake Show debuts on BBC Television. It ran for 3 series but the third series ended after one episode due to injury.

Francis Durbridge Presents: The Doll debuts on BBC 1. Starring Anouska Hempel and John Fraser.
The Charlie Drake Show, aired on BBC TV from 25 November 1960 to 24 October 1961. 3 series totalling 17 episodes were scheduled to be made, but only 12 were completed. The third series was due to consist of 6 episodes. However, during live transmission of the first episode a stunt involving Drake went wrong and he fractured his skull and remained unconscious for 3 days. In the stunt, Drake was to be pulled through a bookcase and then thrown out of a sugar-glass window, only to emerge from a door and belt out his catchphrase, "Hello, my darlings!" However, a team of carpenters, unaware that the bookcase was to be fragile, nailed it down and made it too solid for Drake to pass through clearly. When Drake was pulled through the bookcase, he was knocked unconscious. The two actors who were with Drake, unaware of his condition, then, with visible difficulty, threw him out of the window, where he hit his head on a weight. The episode went off the air when the crew realised what happened. Francis Durbridge Presents: The Doll is a 3 part drama shown on BBC 1 on 25 November, and 2 & 9 December 1975. Peter Matty a successful business man, has his world is turned upside down when he meets the beautiful Phyllis Du Salle on a flight to London. Soon after she disappears, and Matty will stop at nothing to find her. The cast includes Anouska Hempel, John Fraser, Geoffrey Whitehead, Cyril Luckham, Derek Fowlds, Roger Milner, Sheila Keith, Olive Milbourne, Corinna Marlowe, William Russell, Paul Williamson, Roger Gartland and Sarah Brackett.

Come Home, Charlie, and Face Them is a 3 part drama based on the novel by RF Delderfield and adapted for television by Alun Owen. It was shown on ITV on 25 November, and 2 & 9 December 1990. A young bank clerk in North Wales gets involved in complicated relationships and criminal activities. The cast includes Tom Radcliffe, Dafydd Hywel, Peter Sallis, Nicholas Jones, Jennifer Calvert, Sylvia Kay, Dyfed Thomas, Fergus Connor, Gary Olsen, Mossie Smith, Jon Seresi, Leonard Trolley, Struan Rodger and Patrick Godfrey. An LWT Production for ITV. England My England was a television movie made by and shown on Channel 4 on 25 November 1995. In the 1960s, a British playwright attempts to reconstruct the life of real life 17th century English composer Henry Purcell even though little is known about him. Purcell's life is reenacted and his music is performed. The cast includes Simon Callow, Michael Ball, Rebecca Front, Lucy Speed, Letitia Dean, Nina Young, John Shrapnel, Robert Stephens, Terence Rigby, Bill Kenwright, Murray Melvin, Corin Redgrave, John Fortune, Guy Henry, Peter Woodthorpe, Edward Michie, Tom Shrapnel and Antonia De Sancha. Howards' Way began on BBC One on 1 September 1985 and sailed off into the sunset on 25 November 1990. It had run for 6 series totalling 78 episodes. Juke Box Jury was shown on BBC Television as three different incarnations. The first time was 1959-67 and was hosted by David Jacobs. The second version was hosted by Noel Edmonds in 1979. Jools Holland hosted the final series from 1989-90.

Dutch Girls is a one-off feature length drama first shown on ITV on 24 November 1985. The drama is about a group of teenage boys who go to the Netherlands to play hockey. On the trip they drink, smoke, and try to have sex with girls. The cast includes Colin Firth, Timothy Spall, Bill Paterson, Adrian Lukis, James Wilby, Hywel Williams-Ellis, Gusta Gerritsen, Sylvia Millecam, Anne Wil Blankers, Colin McFarlane, Erik Plooyer, Richard Torn and Stephanie Verwijmeren. An LWT Film Production. Dressing for Breakfast is a sitcom that was broadcast on Channel 4 from 24 November 1995 to 27 February 1998. 3 series totalling 21 episodes were made. Alex Polizzi's Italian Islands is a documentary travel series broadcast on Channel 5 from 24 November 2015. Alex Polizzi explores Italy's islands in her TV series, focusing on her Italian heritage. The series visits Sardinia, Sicily, and other islands like Capri, Ischia, Salina, and Filicudi. Polizzi's journey highlights both the well-known and lesser-known hidden gems, weaving in personal memories and a deep connection to the places she visits. Capital is a 3 part television adaptation of the John Lanchester's novel of the same name. It was broadcast on BBC One on 24 November, and 1 & 8 December 2015. The story centres on the residents of a road in South London as the value of each house in the street is approaching £3 million. They all begin to receive repeated postcards with the message "We want what you have." The cast includes Toby Jones, Gemma Jones, Adeel Akhtar, Rachael Stirling, Wunmi Mosaku, Robert Emms, Zrinka Cvitešić and Lesley Sharp. A Kudos production for BBC. The Truth About Child Sex Abuse was a documentary which was shown on BBC Two on 24 November 2015. Hosted by Professor Tanya Byron and Tazeen Ahmad. Broadcast on the same day as the release of the most detailed study into child sexual abuse conducted in the UK, The Truth About Child Sex Abuse was as chilling as it was compassionate. The programme exposed some harrowing truths about paedophilia and sex abuse, including the statistic that 10 per cent of sex abuse is carried out by the victim's own mother. Despite Operation Yewtree and the recent exposure of Rotherham and Rochdale sex abuse rings, Children's Commissioner Anne Longfield said the majority of cases are still not brought to justice because children are too afraid to speak out. And often when they do, they are sadly ignored.

Pet's Parlour with Petula Clark debuted on the BBC Television Service on 24 November 1950. 8 shows were made with the last being shown on 24 July 1953. Petula's guests included Frank Bowers, Bob Monkhouse, Dennis Goodwin, Eric Whitley, Bradley Harris, Gordon Humphries, Barbara Clark, Joe Henderson, James Hayter, John Blythe, Griffith Jones and Max Bygraves. Citizen James is a sitcom that ran on BBC Television from 24 November 1960 to 23 November 1962. 3 series totalling 32 episodes were made. It was initially written by the comedy writing team of Galton and Simpson. The series was set around 'Charlie's Nosh Bar,' a cafe in Soho, and centred on Sid's get-rich-quick schemes. He is helped by "Billy the Kerr" and quite often frustrated by the local bookmaker Albert Welshman. All the while Sid's long-suffering girlfriend has been waiting for seven years for Sid to set the date. The cast includes Sid James, Sydney Tafler, Alec Bregonzi, Bill Kerr and Liz Fraser. Grady is a 3 part drama broadcast on ITV on 24 November, and 1 & 8 December 1970. It focused on industrial relations and featured a tough, individualistic trade-union negotiator in a northern factory. The cast includes Anthony Bate, Leon Eagles, Diana Coupland, Ralph Bates, Terence Alexander, Kathy Staff, Malcolm Terris, John Comer, David Bauer, Roy Holder, Ken Jones, David Garth, David Sumner, Patrick Jordan, Eric Dodson, Michael Graham Cox, Brian McDermott and Wilfred Pickles. A Yorkshire Television production. Diff'rent Strokes is a US television sitcom, which first aired in the UK in some ITV regions from 24 November 1980. Two boys from Harlem are taken in by a wealthy Park Avenue businessman and his daughter. Phillip Drummond is a widower for whom their deceased mother previously worked. His daughter is called Kimberly. During the series, the Drummonds had three housekeepers. Mrs Edna Garrett was the Drummonds' first housekeeper. Next was Adelaide Brubaker, and then Pearl Gallagher. The cast includes Conrad Bain, Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, Dana Plato, Charlotte Rae, Mary Jo Catlett, Danny Cooksey, Dixie Carter, Mary Ann Mobley, Nedra Volz, Janet Jackson, Dody Goodman, Shavar Ross, Le Tari, Rosalind Chao, Steven Mond, Jason Hervey and Nikki Swasey. The Independent Television Authority debuts Engineering Announcements on ITV. A weekly programme for the TV trade so it was never shown in the TV Times listings.

6 part drama The Legend of Robin Hood debuts on BBC 1. Starring Paul Darrow.
Engineering Announcements was a weekly television programme of news and information intended for technicians and salespeople in the United Kingdom, produced and transmitted by the Independent Television Authority (and later the Independent Broadcasting Authority) from 23 November 1970 until 31 July 1990. The show was never shown in TV Times listings as it was a trade only programme. It was shown on all ITV franchises until 17 May 1983. It was then moved to Channel 4 and S4C from 24 May 1983. The series ended as the IBA was being disbanded at the end of 1990. The Legend of Robin Hood was a television serial that told the story of the life of Robin Hood. It was broadcast on BBC 1 from 23 November to 28 December 1975. Robin, raised as a forester by John Hood, finds out he is actually the long lost son of the late Earl of Huntington. Robin is told to go to London and see King Richard I with the Huntington signet ring and a letter. On his way to see the king, he helps the Lady Marion, who is to be married to Sir Guy of Gisborne on the order of her uncle, Sir Kenneth Neston. The cast includes Martin Potter, Diane Keen, William Marlowe, John Abineri, David Dixon, Michael-John Jackson and Paul Darrow. It's noted as a version of Robin Hood that particularly values having "depicted the 12th century accurately."

BBC 1 debuts the sitcom Hudd. Roy Hudd with a different cast of guests for each of the 6 shows.
The Citadel is a 9 part television adaptation of AJ Cronin's 1937 novel of the same name. The series was broadcast on ITV from 23 November 1960 to 18 January 1961. Andrew Manson, an idealistic, newly qualified doctor, arrives from Scotland to work as assistant to Doctor Page in the Welsh mining town of Drineffy (or Blaenelly). He quickly realises that Page is ill and disabled and that he's doing all the work for a meagre wage. Shocked by the unsanitary conditions he discovers, Manson works to improve matters and receives the support of Dr Philip Denny, a cynical semi-alcoholic who, Manson finds out in due course, took a post as an assistant doctor after having fallen from grace as a surgeon. The cast includes Eric Lander, Zena Walker, Jack May, Noel Harrison, Barry Keegan, Elizabeth Shepherd, Richard Vernon, John Laurie, Richard Carpenter and Fiona Duncan. This television adaptation is entirely missing, all nine episodes are believed to be lost. An Associated-Rediffusion production. Hudd is a 6 part sitcom that was broadcast on BBC 1 from 23 November to 28 December 1965. It followed a successful Comedy Playhouse pilot on 15 July 1965. Roy Hudd is Hudd who is joined by a guest cast for each show. These include Ralph Michael, Avril Angers, Freda Bamford, Garry Marsh, Carole Mowlam, Cheryl Molineaux, Amy Dalby, Michael Bates, Ann Ramsden, Vicky Morris, Juba Kennerley, Leila Forde, Una Stubbs, David Langton, Aubrey Woods, Roy Evans, Patricia Clapton, Lisa Peake, Michael Harvey, Charles Bird, Nan Kearns and John Mulgrew.

ITV debuts the 6 part legal drama Close and True. Robson Green is John Close and James Bolam is Graham True. Also stars Jamie Bell (Billy Elliott).
Game for a Laugh arrived on our television screens on 26 September 1981. 4 years, 5 series and 60 episodes later - the show came to an end on 23 November 1985. Hosts were Jeremy Beadle, Henry Kelly, Matthew Kelly, Sarah Kennedy, Martin P Daniels, Rustie Lee, Lee Peck and Debbie Rix. An LWT Production. Close and True is a 6 part legal drama broadcast on ITV from 23 November to 28 December 2000. John Close takes over a run-down legal practice owned by Graham True who now resides in a mental institution. During his first days in charge of the practice, he is thrown into the midst of a murder trial despite having no criminal trial experience. The cast includes Robson Green, James Bolam, Susan Jameson, Kerry Ann Christiansen, Jamie Bell and Nicola Grier. A Coastal Production for Meridian Broadcasting.

Tomorrow's Food is a 3 part documentary series shown on BBC One on 23 & 30 November, and 7 December 2015. Dara Ó Briain, Angela Hartnett, Chris Bavin and Shini Somara reveal the awe-inspiring future of our food and to bring us the amazing innovations that will soon be on our dinner plates. Britain's Outlaws: Highwaymen, Pirates and Rogues is a 3 part historical documentary series shown on BBC Four on 23 & 30 November, and 7 December 2015. Historian Dr Sam Willis explores the world of outlaws in 17th and 18th-century Britain. The host focuses on a particular era in each episode, discovering why rogues were celebrated in popular culture. Stories of urban criminals, highwaymen and rebellious pirates are widely documented in literature and art, but Willis goes on a journey to reveal the truth behind the romanticised image of the outlaw. The historian refers to Britain's political past to view why these individuals were both feared and admired in the public eye.

Leslie Mitchell was born on 4 October 1905 and passed away on 23 November 1985 at the age of 80. He was an actor, continuity announcer and broadcaster who was heard on newsreel soundtracks, radio, and television. Mitchell was the first voice heard on BBC Television on 2 November 1936, and also gave the inaugural announcement on Associated-Rediffusion, the joint first company to broadcast as part of the ITV network, on 22 September 1955. His voice was perhaps best known from his lengthy relationship with British Movietone News, for which he provided commentary on newsreels. Leslie was the Royal Television Society's first honorary member. Johnny Mandel was born on 23 November 1925 and passed away on 29 June 2020 at the age of 94. He was the composer of many theme tunes of television series and films. Mandel wrote the theme tune to M*A*S*H. He also was involved in Too Close for Comfort, Sesame Street, Banyon, The Andy Williams Show, Markham, Ben Casey, and Mister Roberts.

Zoe Ball was born on 23 November 1970. She is a broadcaster and presenter. Zoe currently hosts the BBC Radio 2 drive time show. She is the daughter of Johnny Ball and the mother of Woody Cook. Ball married Norman Cook, they're currently separated. Darren Jordon was born on 23 November 1960. He is a newsreader. Darren worked in South Africa before joining BBC News in 1998. In 2006, Jordon departed for Al Jazeera English where he continues to work to this day.

Hazel Adair was born on 9 July 1920 and passed away on 22 November 2015 at the age of 95. She was an actress turned screenwriter and creator of soap operas for radio and television. Adair is best known for co-creating the ATV Midlands soap opera Crossroads with Peter Ling. Hazel first appeared on BBC Television in 1950 in the drama Lady Precious Stream. She then turned to writing scripts for ITV soap Sixpenny Corner and a drama for BBC children's show Whirligig. Robin Stewart was born on 9 October 1946 and passed away on 22 November 2015 at the age of 69. He was an actor, game show host and reporter. Robin was best known for playing Mike Abbott, the son of Sid Abbott in the 1970s sitcom Bless This House. He also worked in Australia appearing as Ross Newman in Channel 7 soap Sons and Daughters. Stewart's other television credits include Deadline Midnight, Dixon of Dock Green, The Very Merry Widow, Softly Softly, The Troubleshooters, Whodunnit?, Leap in the Dark, The Timeless Land, The Young Doctors, Five Mile Creek, Sweet and Sour, Runaway Island and Welcher & Welcher. George Alagiah was born on 22 November 1955 and passed away on 24 July 2023 at the age of 67. He was a newsreader, journalist and television presenter for the BBC. From 2007 until 2022, George was the presenter of the BBC News at Six and the main presenter of GMT on BBC World News from its launch in 2010 until 2014. He also worked on BBC News at 1, 9 and 10. Alagiah started as a reporter on Developing World and presented the first BBC Four News.

4 part drama The Sea Dragon is first shown on ITV from 22 November to 13 December 1990. In the 10th century, Jestyn, a young orphan with a Celtic father and Saxon mother, is captured by Vikings and sold as a slave in Dublin; his master, Thormod, frees him for good service and Jestyn sails to Denmark on one of his longships. On returning to Ireland, he finds Thormod's father murdered. Jestyn and Thormod swear to avenge him, and the search for the killers leads them to the Baltic and Kiev. In Constantinople, Jestyn, still searching for his roots and his identity, discovers a totally unknown Byzantine world. Drawn in, he remains there. The cast includes Pat Roach, Anna Massey, Graham McGrath, Janek Lesniak, Baard Owe, Eiry Palfrey, Holly Aird, Martin Spang Olsen, Bernard Latham, Øystein Wiik, Trine Pallesen, Lisa Thorslunde and Lasse Spang Olsen. We Are Who We Are is a coming-of-age drama television miniseries first shown on Sky Atlantic Italia and HBO before being debuted on BBC iPlayer's BBC Three section from 22 November 2020. The series was co-created and directed by Luca Guadagnino. The story is set on a fictional US military base in Chioggia, Italy in 2016. It follows two American teenagers, Fraser Wilson and Caitlin "Harper" Poythress. The series explores friendship, first love and identity, and immerses the audience in all the messy exhilaration and anguish of being a teenager. Simon Reeve sets out on an epic journey around the island of Ireland - a place steeped in history, culture and belief, but with a complex past. Simon begins his journey in the south of Ireland, para-motoring with an Irish explorer. On the west coast, he does a spot of surfing before climbing Croagh Patrick in honour of Ireland's patron saint. This leg of his journey ends in Malin Head, Ireland's most northerly point. On the second show, Simon starts at the spectacular Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. He then travels down the east coast to the great and rapidly changing cities of Belfast and Dublin. He ends his journey in the stunning Wicklow Mountains.

TV schedules are interrupted as it is announced that Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is resigning.
On 22 November 1980, UK fans of the US series Dallas saw the first episode of the new series on BBC 1. Finally, the cliffhanger ending from the end of the last series would be answered - "Who Shot JR?" It was revealed that Kristin Shepard (played by Mary Crosby) shot JR. 21.5 million UK viewers tuned in, a record at the time. Major television channels abandoned their scheduled programming on 22 November 1990 after an important piece of breaking news. At 09:30 GMT, the Conservative Central Office issued a statement announcing that Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was to resign.
