quiet fandom sideblog of an unexceptional lady

the annual flood of kudos over the holidays always makes me laugh. everyone is at home and surrounded by family and sneaking AO3 to cope

occasionally hanging out in a fandom where the average age is 40ish? discord is generally quiet and people catch up at night. channels for stuff like photography, cars, beer. there's a gal showing off her teenage son's first fanfic. one lady is 79 and writes fic and shares pasta recipes

currently adoring Princess Jellyfish (Kuragehime), a gently bonkers rom-com manga

Volume 1: What happens when these unemployed fujoshi meet a sexy crossdresser?

Volume 81: Here’s how deflation during the Lost Decades and unregulated Chinese investment destroyed the Japanese textile industry

working on this novel, but also sporadically dabbling in a (very, very, very) old fandom and delighting in it. I have missed godawful jokes and pure slapstick with my entire soul

two projects at once is not a bad idea, especially if they're emotional opposites and can help when one gets too heavy

happy Christmas crunch season to all who celebrate, aka "if it doesn't happen in the next two weeks it's not happening"

Sunlight falls through windows, adding to the geometric pattern on floor. A woman is playing music. And a man listens from the shadowed bed. Painted by Emanuel de Witte, whose day is today.

spent like a couple days on furlough tapping stuff out and did it. as much as I believe you can and should abandon things when you're no longer interested, I also believe that it's critical to be able to see a work through to completion, and you should be finishing work more often than not
what do you mean I have to write it

classics > writing > international relations, because writing is a terrible way to get health insurance and the government used to value people who could communicate with tact and clarity
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

Day 43 of furlough: thanks to the valiant efforts of airline industry lobbyists, the furlough ends tonight. minus some (commendable but temporary) fed worker protections, this entire exercise accomplished nothing except for wasting taxpayers billions of dollars and impoverishing people
Day 42 of furlough: healing myself with Schubert lieder, in particular this divine performance by Barbara Bonney

I've thought really long and hard about this fic so why doesn't it have any kudos or comments yet

the urge to write a short story where the A-plot is told like the B-plot because it's narrated by a character with little to no interest in the A-plot

Day 37 of furlough: "Wow, I've never done so much writing in two days," I say, impressed with my newfound creativity and commitment, until I realize it's just the Sudafed for my sinus infection
Day 34 of furlough:

"Posting, liking, and sharing content are consumerist practices that intensify the narrative crisis." --- Byung-Chul Han
Day 27 of furlough: reposting this - if you have a dime to spare, please, please donate to your local food bank or pantry. We're about to experience an unprecedented surge in hunger.

when you buy a home you are initiated into the sacred tradition of The Last Owners Were Idiots. this includes you, by the way. you are now an idiot. you will do colossally dumb things no one has ever thought of before

Day 21 of furlough: it's autumn, which means it's time to celebrate a masterpiece of uniquely American music---featuring legends of American opera, jazz, and theater

I am of course talking about Over the Garden Wall
Day 15 of furlough: (finished second nap, wearing pajamas at 4 PM) it's time for a critical re-appraisal of David Moo as Xellos
Day 1 of furlough: Just think of it like an unpaid vacation-slash-hostage-situation

Day 2 of furlough: can a Wegman's crumb cake fix me

Hm, a care package is a nice gesture, I guess, but I would have preferred your husband not financing and fundraising for the operation that led to me and three-quarters of a million people going unpaid.

the staff on this site botched comms so badly that now people are freaking out over the use of AI to automatically filter images (a thing that all social media websites do because the alternative is making your mods manually review thousands of images of gore and CSAM per hour)

I have been enjoying Bluesky thus far with the occasional bumps here and there, but I have serious apprehensions about the site's long-term viability if the CEO is going to behave like a teenager subtweeting her ops.
