Gnocchi is one of my extremely food-sensitive son's comfort foods, but he hates the texture of the pre-packaged store gnocchi, so on weekends I make it from scratch. We eat a LOT of gnocchi.

I meant to post a WIP Wednesday yesterday and forgot, so here's a Thought-of-it-late Thursday, I guess:

“Don’t tell me you’ve been tied up this whole time.”
“Sophia has been kind enough to release me at mealtimes. Beyond that…” Akira shrugs. “Our new captain has concerns about my safety.”
*I can’t imagine why.* “How are you feeling?”
“My legs aren’t broken, my skin is intact, and it’s been four days since anyone punched me. As captivity goes, I’d say I’m doing well.”
“Your standards are abysmal.”
“For both captivity and quartermasters, it seems. I gave you an *order*, Goro. I ordered you to get everyone else out.”
Akira’s eyes are rapiers, hard and sharp. Goro meets them with steel of his own. “I made you a promise first. No matter what orders you give me, I won’t leave you to hang alone.”

Sneaking in a pre-Yom-Kippur WIP Wednesday, featuring Brigverse Goro taking his turn in the teenage-girls-asking-pointed-questions torment nexus:

“It’s stupid, isn’t it? I wanted to help Captain Kurusu, and all I did was make things worse.” Akane grimaces. “You must hate me, huh?”

“If you’re looking for reassurance—”

“I’m not.”

“Then no, I don’t. I agree that you were unfathomably stupid, and if it were up to me, you’d still be on Sakoda’s ship. You shouldn’t have been Akira’s responsibility, and I don't consider you mine. Beyond that, I have no feelings about you at all.”

For a moment, Akane looks like she might cry. Then she exhales sharply and shakes her head. “At least you’re honest.”

“More honest than you. You don’t care about my opinion. You want to know what Akira thinks.” It’s a position Goro is used to—an old wound, mostly healed. “It’s fine. I admitted my own indifference; I’d be a hypocrite to take offense at yours.”

“That isn’t why I—”

“No lying, remember. That was our deal.”

“I’m not. Sophia told me you give good advice. But I figured, if you resent me, it wouldn’t be fair of me to ask.” Akane's eyes are still moist, but the look she gives him is almost pitying.
“You expect other people not to like you
much, huh?”

“That wasn’t the point.”

“No dodging, remember. That was our deal.”

The problem with adding a chapter to my fic outline to allow for some character/relationship development is that now I have several different "it would be cool to develop THIS relationship a bit more before Later Events" scenarios competing in my brain and I need to pick ONE goddamn lane
