Our union mourns the sudden loss UFCW 324 President Andrea Zinder. Andrea stood shoulder-to-shoulder with UFCW 3000 in the fight against the Kroger–Albertsons merger, in countless organizing campaigns, and in building worker power. Solidarity forever.✊

Solidarity forever: QFC workers ratified an agreement to allow displaced Fred Meyer workers to transfer into open QFC positions while retaining their union seniority. This ensures a fair transfer for 700+ workers whose jobs were put at risk by Kroger’s store closures. ufcw3000.org/news/2025/9/...

Our communities have had it with Kroger's corporate greed. We're fighting back on all fronts, and we're fighting for fresh food for all. Learn more at our Fresh Food for All Community Town Hall this Saturday from 2-4 at the Seattle Labor Temple. Link in bio.
A picture of the entrance to a Fred Meyer store. Below is the logo for Supermarket News and the text, Fred Meyer faces local pushback on store closures, new labor lawsuit. BY Makr Hamstra, Wednesday September 19, 2025" “Kroger’s closures put profit over people, plain and simple,” said Faye Guenther, president of UFCW 3000.

“Unfortunately, due to a steady rise in theft and a challenging regulatory environment that adds significant costs, we can no longer make these stores financially viable,” a Fred Meyer spokesperson told Supermarket News. “Despite doubling our safety and security investment over the past years, these challenges remain.” Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin, for example, this week called for a resolution rebuking Kroger for its decision to close the store there.

“The closure will result in the loss of jobs and significantly impact food and retail access in Everett’s most diverse and economically challenged communities,” Franklin’s proposal states. “This resolution expresses the City Council’s solidarity with affected workers and residents, calls on Kroger to reconsider its decision and urges reinvestment in employees and the neighborhood.” Meanwhile, a class-action labor lawsuit against Fred Meyer alleging the chain violated Washington state law by prohibiting hourly workers from holding second jobs was moved to a federal court this week. The suit was determined to potentially include several thousand workers in multiple states, who could receive a total of at least $81.3 million.

Fred Meyer workers spoke, and Everett listened. Last night, the council condemned Kroger for closing the Casino Road store, putting the city on record: Our communities come before Wall Street greed.

Kroger is closing Fred Meyer stores in our region for one reason: corporate greed. They're abandoning working class communities in search of higher profits. Tune into the Everett City Council meeting at 6:30 pm tonight to hear the real story from workers.

BY FRANK LENZI KIRO News Director. Wednesday September 17, 2025" The Everett City Council is expected to vote Wednesday night on a resolution criticizing Kroger’s decision to close a Fred Meyer store in South Everett—a move Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin calls “corporate neglect.” “It betrays the community’s trust,” Franklin said.

“Crime is down all over in that area, but shoplifting is down by 80%, and that is a significant decrease,” she told KIRO Newsradio. “We put in the effort. We made those investments, yet the store didn’t, you know, continue to invest in their facility.”

The evidence continues to mount: Kroger's closures are about selling out working-class communities.
An ariel picture of the Lake City Fred Meyer and parking lot. Below is the logo of the Seattle Time and the headline, "Lake City Fred Meyer faces closure Lawmakers want to change that. By Paul Roberts Monday, September 8, 2025" Text on a slide reading: "In an Aug. 22 tele-meeting with Farivar and other local lawmakers, Kroger indicated that it regards the store, on a 5.5-acre parcel at 13000 Lake City Way NE, to be less profitable as a grocery-and-retail operation than as a real estate investment."
Text reading: During that meeting, Kroger officials said they were planning what’s known as a request for proposals, or RFP, to redevelop the Lake City site. They also said Kroger was open to an outright sale of the property, which was recently assessed at $25 million, mostly for the land. Text reading " Pollet, the state representative, said Kroger didn’t appear interested in discussing ways to actually address its stated concerns.
He said it was “telling” that one of the Kroger executives in the meeting was the company’s head of real estate, which “would not seem to be relevant to concerns about theft and the (regulatory) issues that they raised.”

The gap between reality and Kroger's talking points keeps widening. The company is closing stores in our working-class neighborhoods because of corporate greed — full stop. www.kentreporter.com/business/cri...

Below is the logo for the Kent reporter and the headline "Crime Stats show theft dropping at Kent East Hill Fred Meyer. By Steve Hunter. Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Text reading: The number of crime incidents dropped 38% (158 to 98) from 2022 to 2024, according to Kent Police case reports obtained by the Kent Reporter through a public records request. The number of thefts dropped 48% (62 to 32) over the same period. Text Reading: “Kroger’s statements to reporters blaming closures on ‘a challenging regulatory environment’ and ‘a steady rise in theft’ do not appear to comport with reality, so far as we can tell,” - UFCW 3000 “The company plans to close 60 stores across the country — they’re closing five stores in Georgia, a handful of stores in Tennessee, and also stores in other states with the lowest possible minimum wage in the country, so that excuse seems thin.” - UFCW 3000

Labor Day is a holiday won by workers, for workers. It’s a day to celebrate the rights we’ve fought for, honor the struggles that got us here, & recommit to building a stronger future together. Join us at one of the events happening across our state to stand in solidarity and celebrate workers.

Let’s be clear: deporting Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda makes no sense—it’s not his home country. Nothing about this process has been fair. ICE is targeting him with cruelty. This is the weaponization of government, not justice.

Thanks to the support of our loyal customers, union grocery workers won good wage increases and first-in-the-nation contract language to address the staffing crisis in stores. All of that will help reduce long lines and keep shelves stocked. buff.ly/2o4s5Uo

We ultimately won temporary raises in places such as Seattle and Burien.

As QFC worker Hilary T.T. Williamson put it at the time: “Hazard pay is needed for grocery workers. We work around the public every day, risking our health to feed our families."
ufcw3000.bsky.social
As the pandemic closed businesses around the world, grocery stores stayed open. Given the risk to grocery store workers, our unions fought hard for hazard pay needed to survive. UFCW Locals 21 and 1439 (who had not yet merged to form UFCW 3000) demanded hazard pay in city halls across the region.
