Someone said to me, "I'm sorry but I got your book from a library." Nobody should ever apologise for that. You read my book! That's brilliant! I grew up hanging out in libraries and the idea of a world without them fills me with dread. Without libraries, authors, like readers, will only suffer.

THE TOWER OF CIRITH UNGOL

The doorman’s eyes locked with mine as I approached, a sweet warmth pouring from the entryway behind the blood-coloured curtain. Already my head was swimming. As desire thundered in my skull I felt my focus slipping away. “Bienvenue, Monsieur Lamb,” he said, his voice gruff. I dipped my head in greeting. He swept aside the curtain and I descended into the dark. The hallway opened like a throat. From the main room, hands appeared to take my coat, my hat. I let them, soothed by the cushioning darkness, given a velvet quality by the haze of smoke. From within this shroud came points of soft light; the low, controlled glow of an opium lamp. They scattered the murky room like dying stars. Amongst them, amongst the pillows and furs, lay piles of unmoving contorted flesh. Bodies on bodies. Limp, cast across one another careless. A mass grave. Their breath was soft, almost invisible, their half-closed eyes sucked into a drowning pool of dreaming. Atop a bunk lay a woman in repose, as if painted, her face turned from me, her hand hanging limp over the edge. This was a house of the dead. Its denizens never-living. All those years I had lived beneath the soil, in those cut, festering wells of misery and fear. It was here alone I could feel the soft embrace of the grave.

His fingers catch on something - an opening on Arthur’s abdomen, dark, violent. “it’s nothing,” he says. “An old wound.” Victor touches the raised rim of the slit in his side. It weeps with pale, clear fluid, the vulgar flesh beneath pink and luminous. Victor stares at it as if it is nothing short of stigmata, the scar dissolved, the wound miraculously reopened. He raises himself, presses his lips to it. It burns beneath them. Arthur grunts. His hand rests gently on the back of Victor’s head as if in blessing, strokes his hair. Arthur leans down to kiss him, tastes the salt on his lips.

From the short I’m currently writing!
Tamás examines his patients diligently, tending the living as they slip closer to their doom. At night, by candlelight, he dissects the dead. He is no closer to a rational explanation. He has no army of nurses to support him, no peers to conference with. They call him expert, but in truth there are none. A doctor, his mettle tested in a time of plague; now he finds he has stumbled into a new profession. He sleeps not. At daybreak he sends a rider with a writ to the state begging for assistance, but even as he does he knows none shall come. The locals tell him the ailment he seeks can be named; defiant, he refuses to hear it. In truth, he has heard it before. He has seen it before. The teeth and nails grown long in death. The dead heart frothing with fresh blood. The seasons-gone corpse supple, incorrupt. It was his mistake in pursuing this curiosity to begin with. Now, he finds himself shackled to it.

I spent a lot of time this year wallowing and fighting with my mental health.

I really want to start the New Year working on myself. More drawing, more reading, and more new experiences. I let myself stay scared and defeated, and that's not how I want 2026 to go.

My torchlight revealed a sight that had become familiar — the taxidermist’s second floor, lined with glass-fronted mahogany cabinets holding an array of fine shells and shimmering birds, their gemstone feathers not dulled in death. Atop matching filing cabinets comprised of tens of slender drawers, stuffed beasts cast irregular shadows, stark in the circular glow. They gathered as they never would have in life, as if posing for a tintype. Majestic, and exquisite in detail, their glass eyes glinting. The floorboards creaked under my footsteps. A secretary bird poked its strange head up between the effigy of a leaping gazelle and the great mane of an enormous lion, his expression impassive and regal. Around it, an ibis, an egret, a bedraggled juvenile penguin.
