Macron has two choices: appoint a socialist/green prime minister or dissolve the National Assembly. New elections would be a disaster, so he has to swallow his misplaced pride and hope for a compromise with the centre-left.

The whole piece feels like a big straw man. Where did the author find those Europeans who want to move to the US right now or think that Europe is part of America? I'm sure all kinds of people exist, but it's a bit bizarre to pretend that this is mainstream thinking in Europe.

Hungary, Slovakia and Czechia would be Central Europe. If you mean Eastern Europe in the old Cold War sense, I can hardly see Poland and the Baltic states ever moving in that direction. In Romania and Moldova, pro-European forces won difficult elections this year.

Today I'm reviewing the Latvian translation of my book. Sections on US foreign policy feel like they describe a vanished world. One that existed in 1990, and to some extent even in 2024, but no longer does. That world was far from perfect, as the book shows, but what has replaced it is despicable.
