This is obscene. Absolutely deranged what's become of our universities. They're all run by corporate villains now.

At UNB, professors and students were surveilled for Palestine solidarity because, per campus security, the university is the President’s “house.”

This is so significant: a new comprehensive report detailing the myriad modalities of Canadian university complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Palestine at Canadian Universities: How institutional complicity in colonial genocide is maintained

Rather than limiting or cutting ties with Israeli institutions (which play an important role in providing logistics, manpower, and research to support the genocide) UofT has intensified connections to and collaborations with Israel. See "Sparrows for Palestine" substack.com/home/post/p-... [1/3]
How embedded within UofT have partnerships with Israeli institutions become?
Quick answer: Very, very much.

The University of Toronto has made a consistent point of surveilling and disciplining faculty members critical of Israel's genocide in Gaza.

When you read this, it becomes very clear why that is.

“Given the ongoing genocide in Gaza…we call on Sport Canada and Tennis Canada to forbid Canadian athletes to compete against Israeli athletes at the Davis Cup and all other international events.”

- 413 🇨🇦 academics, athletes + sports journalists, inc 3 former UN special rapporteurs + an Olympic 🥈ist
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (FREDERICTON, August 18th, 2025) A group of 413 Canadian and Canadian-based scholars, athletes, sports journalists, and sports officials have signed a public letter calling on Tennis Canada to cancel the Davis Cup tournament with Israel this September in Halifax. Signatories include three United Nations Special Rapporteurs, four-time Olympian distance runner Mohammed Ahmed, two members of the Palestinian women’s soccer team who compete for York University, a former Canadian Olympic beach volleyball coach, sports journalists Shireen Ahmed and Ian Kennedy, public intellectuals and activists Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis and some of Canada’s most distinguished and internationally-recognized scholars. The letter is signed by prominent individuals from 46 different academic institutions in Canada, as well as by Canadians at prominent global institutions. One hundred and six of the signatories are based in Atlantic Canada, where the event is slated to occur. The call to cancel the Davis Cup event comes amidst rising condemnation of Israeli conduct in Gaza and the West Bank, which leading legal scholars, activists and human rights groups have described as a genocide. Given the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the letter says that allowing the competition to go ahead is “unconscionable” and calls on the Canadian government to prevent Canadian athletes from competing against Israeli athletes in all international sporting competitions. Despite Tennis Canada’s claims that the event isn’t political and is just about playing tennis, the letter states in part that Canada should follow the lead of other nations who “refuse to legitimize Israel’s crimes” by withdrawing from international sporting competition. “This includes Jordanian tennis player Abdellah Shelbayh, who recently withdrew from a tennis competition in Greece after being slated to play an Israeli athlete,” the letter says. The letter points to the use of sporting sanctions in South Africa as a meaningful …

This is, frankly, an incredible piece that connects the carceral logic and violence of the border to the Israeli genocidal project in Gaza and beyond.

I am dead serious when I say anyone who is teaching in any of these areas needs to have this on the syllabus this year.

Rawan Abdelbaki and Rana Sukarieh argue that Zionism is a project of bordering that is both materially embedded in, and helps proliferate, global racial capitalism.

Francesca Albanese's most recent report has profound implications for higher ed.

None is more serious than this: administrators are *personally accountable* under international law for complicity in genocide for institutional entanglements w/ Israel and military-industrial companies.

Last year our faculty association had a THREE HOUR meeting to debate why we should boycott/divest/sanction a country that is actively committing genocide.

It was not a great day to be an academic. And I won’t ever stop pushing us in higher ed to practice the values we teach.

This is very good -- the thread & article.

“…this crisis has very little to do with the…Trump administration. It is, rather, the self-inflicted consequence of the decisions of university administrators whose allegiances are now first and foremost to donors and corporate stakeholders…”

The DOE says Columbia should lose its accreditation. They are of course wrong.

They are also right.

For @aljazeera.com, we argue that in systematically compromising the rights of anti-genocide students and faculty, universities like Columbia have violated the very terms that allow them to exist.
Columbia University deserves to lose its accreditation
Not over the false claims of the Trump administration, but over its failure to protect academic freedom.

412 academics, diplomats, former ministers, + lawyers send 🇨🇦 PM @markcarneyforpm.bsky.social letter re: Israel’s Gaza genocide demanding Canada “do everything in its power to stop these atrocities and support efforts to bring those responsible to account,” including sanctions + end to free trade.
• Insist on full humanitarian access to Gaza in a manner in keeping with core humanitarian principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence, and demand that the Israeli ban on the UN Relief and Works Agency be completely lifted.
• Publicly support the role of and fully comply with international courts in holding to account those who violate international law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory including Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and Israel.
• Pursue all possible domestic measures, including immediately withdrawing from the free trade agreement between Canada and Israel, imposing sanctions on Israeli leaders and other individuals suspected of involvement in atrocity crimes, initiating investigations into charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity under the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act (including any Canadians or dual nationals involved in such crimes) with the aim of prosecuting offenders in Canada or other jurisdictions, enforcing a full and comprehensive two- way arms embargo, and stripping charitable status from organizations found to be complicit in crimes under international law.
