Both are seated at the front of a conference room with a PowerPoint presentation on a large screen behind them. Patrick Piuma, director of the Envirome Institute’s Urban Design Studio, speaks to a group in front of the Trager MicroForest sign. Sunlight streams through the plants and trees at the Trager MicroForest with the tour group in the distance.

The “publish or perish” culture in academia creates its own kind of evolutionary pressure.

A scholar who studies human behavior through a cultural evolutionary lens explains how the relentless drive to publish can shape – and sometimes undermine – the quality of research.
